My lovely piggie Parkin seems like he might be giving up on life. He's so very tired and lethargic and not taking much interest in life. HIs cage mate is fine, and they are both eating and drinking ok. Anyone got any suggestions on what I can do to perk him up a bit?

Have you taken him to a vet to see what the problem is? They will be able to advise on what to do. How long has he been like this?

No I haven't taken him yet, as I can't really think of what to say to them that would make sense. He just seems more lethargic than usual, but nothing really wrong iyswim. I've tried letting him have different runs around the place in case he's bored, but he's not really interested in exploring, and have also checked him over but there're no wounds, infections, mites, lice, fungal etc that I can see.

Maybe it would be worth getting an appointment with a cavy savvy vet, at least it will put your mind at rest! Also as pigs can go down hill very quickly, it's better to catch the onset of a problem sooner rather than later.

How old is he? They do slow down considerably when they hit old age ( which can be a different age for each piggie ) but if you're worried it's definitely worth going to a cavy savvy vet for a check up. has he gained any weight? I mention this because Yoshi slowed down fairly quickly, didn't eat much but gained a lot of weight and it turned out to be an under active thyroid which of course can make you feel very sluggish and depressed.

thanks everyone. He's coming up for four in the summer, and we've had him since he was 3 wheeks old. I hate to think it might be old age, but he just hasn't much energy atm. We're close to the Dick Vet in Edinburgh which has specialist exotics so I'll get him an appointment. But if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful for them in the meantime.

my 4 year old boy has days like that, he'll just want to sit and watch the world go by. It usually only lasts a day or so and then he'll be back to normal and exploring during floor time.
