Hey everyone,

When i got home from work i noticed Patch's eye was very swollen and gooey so i got her out to look over it and see what was the problem, i noticed a short strand of hay poked in her eye socket that appeared to be stuck. I took her downstairs to my mum immediately who helped gently pull it out, the hay came out easily it was maybe a 1cm long and there was no resistance when my mum pulled it but i was at work for six hours and i don't know when abouts in that time she got it in her eye.

I'm just very worried because it now 11pm and i got home at 5:15pm although it looks much better it's still slightly swollen and red. Patch isn't her self either she's my least cuddley piggie but she's just snuggling up to me and seems run down but is eating and drinking and playing fine.

Should we try and bathe it for her, should i get her to the vet tomo?

Can we use optrex or salt water?

Thank you in advance!

:(

Yes get her to the vets tomorrow and you can wash it in water but I would wait to see what the vet says. Do you have any pain relief?

Not at the moment I'm afraid, I'll make an appointment in the morning thanks for replying! x

Hey guys,

Patch eye did look better when i woke up earlier this morning but i was still worried as it was gooey so got her to the vet as soon as he had an appointment free... i woke my mum up for this as i don't drive ( she wasn't too impressed)

Patch took a major dislike to vet and kept nipping him... which was kind of a relief because she's back to her unsociable self XD

Anyho he had a very thorough look at the eye and he says there is nothing else in there, he thinks it was so inflammed because she could have had it just before i left for work and would have kept scratching at it and washing her face to try and get it out.

I asked him about the optrex and he said no don't do that, i also asked him if we should bathe it with water and he had another look at her eye, he said he'd flush it out quick and give her a dose of pain relief and that we should just leave it and watch how to see how she goes.

He said if the substance keeps leaking from her eye and it still cloudy by Monday to get her back in but he said he's seen this a few times and most guinea pig can get it out them selves and heals pretty quickly but sometimes it can be more complicated.

I was hoping he would give me pain relief for her over the next day but he says it shouldn't be needed.. :hmm:

I hope he's right and I'll keep a else eye on her.

Thank you for all your replies, i was so worried last night and my mum was like ohh my guinea did this when i was little and we just left her and it was better in a few days.. she thinks i overreact when it comes to my piggies.

Maple had hay in her eye - they used UV drops to see the damage and prescribed her eyedrops and pain relief. She is now on stronger eye drops and a lotion based eye drop.

Think you should take her back and see someone else... Eye related injuries can get pretty bad if not treated properly...

EDIT: I posted a thread about it and was advised if it clouded over take her to the vet. Her eye did that and next day went straight there..

I agree with Jesss. Every time I have had a piggy with an eye injury, they have always prescribed a course of eye drops / ointment to be applied twice daily for several days.

Did your vet do the dye test where they use dye to stain the eye? Eyes can form corneal ulcers which can not always be seen by the naked eye.

My Enoch had a hay poke a few months ago. A blue covering appeared on his eye and it was only by doing the dye test that showed he had a corneal ulcer.

These can be painful and cause further problems if left untreated.

No he just held her head still and had a look at it, he also felt around the eye, her eye is no longer got any discharge and she's got it open fine, it isn't drooped but slightly red and cloudy.

It was an emergency appointment as their not normally open on Saturday's... he's normally a good vet.

I won't take her to chase because they are awful...

I just got my mum to phone the vet in horse bridge where i got ginger neutered which was completely successful but they close at one and have no appointments left, we spoke to the vet on the phone and she if she's not better to bring her in on Monday morning. She said the cloudy part could be where her eye was irritated where the hay poked in and that they would only treat it as an emergency if she wasn't eating or drinking normally and there was excessive leakage from her eye... she said to keep a very close eye on her

I'm even more worried now.. i felt slightly better after the vet at 10 oclock :(

I'm sorry to have worried you :(

I'm just surprised that the vet didn't prescribe any eye drops and I know from past experience how bad eye problems can be.

Try not to worry but if it gets any worse, please try and see another vet before Monday.

The painkiller should last between 24 and 48 hours depending on the dosage given.

I'm too surprised he didn't do the dye test or even prescribe you pain relief for her as I have Maple for experience.

Keep the area as clean as you can with lukewarm water with no salt and once you get her back to the vet make sure they do the dye test and suggest pain relief and eyedrops if they need coaxing (Shouldn't need to do that if they have experience with piggies)

this happened to maisie and the vet put some dye in her eye to check for any damage. she was then put on metacam and eye drops. it will probably go cloudy and they usually do a follow up appointment after the meds to check the eye again for ulcers. x

Hey guys, Patch's eye is back to normal, it's completely healed and she's back to her normal self, if you looked at it now you wouldn't have known she had hay stuck in it only 3 days ago, I'm surprised at how quickly it healed but i will still keep a close on her for the next week or so!

Thank you for the advice and help x

:)
