I was grooming one of my boars today and I noticed there was a small area on his lower back where the hair was thinner. I checked and found the skin was dry and flaky. He sometimes get a bit of dandruff but this is different. He doesn't seem to like me touching it. He had lice when I first brought him home but I now treat him and his brother for parasites regularly ( along with my rats which live near by ) and I can't see anything else that would indicate parasites. I groom him quite often so he can't have been like this for long. He had a bath last week if that means anything but I don't bathe them a lot. His brother is fine. Any ideas of what I could do?

I would have him seen by a vet to determine what it is and what is needed to treat it.

It could be a skin issue like dermatitis I only say that because Maple has that skin issue and she ended up getting flaky skin and losing her hair on her rump. It got so bad she managed to scratch her back up until it was an open wound or caught it on something. We still don't know how she managed it. Was on Baytril, lotion that was intended to burn victims and a bath...

Check with your vet and make sure they take a skin sample to rule out mites and mange.

this may sound bad but I'm not sure it's time for the vets yet. He doesn't seem to mind too much and it's not that bad at the moment. ( if it gets any worse I ill definitely take him ) he does get dry skin but I'm just wondering why this patch has developed

If there is persistent scratching and biting please take your Piggie to the vet. Th vet will be able to give you medicated shampoo to help with dryness. Don't leave it until it gets worse or more visible.

is there anything I can do in the meantime? I haven't dealt much with dry skin before this pig

Guinea pigs hide and sign of pain or illness. It is very likely the skin is irritating him.
