I think we are getting closer to finding out why Peanut Butter has enlarged lymph nodes. After 3 weeks of Baytril and one of Zithromax, he was due in to the vet's yesterday for a follow-up. But while still at home on 3 occasions PB squeaked and raised his back end. It was at the vet's that we discovered the tip of his penis was looking very red. She said if it was a UTI Bactrim would be the best anti-biotic but she has to order it in, so won't get it until Monday when PB is due in for his regular dental anyway.

She armed us with another few days of anti-biotic Baytril, pain killer Tramal and specimen jar to bring in a urine sample for Monday. Thanks to this lovely forum I know how I am to get the sample and have just the bowl and syringe ready.

Can anyone shed any light on the possible causes of a red penis? Would a UTI cause this?

It could be just an infection or an inflammation if he had stubbed his penis on some hay for instance. Hopefully, bactrim will do the trick if it is a UTI.

I am very sorry for all your problems and hope that you can get to the bottom of it all; it looks like it is one of these complicated issues. At least you have a competent vet who is doing all she can!

Thanks Wiebke. PB has become a favourite at the vet's. My vet and I are of the opinion we haven't fought for almost 2 years to keep on top of his dental problems to let him succumb to something else, so yes all will be done for PB. When one of the assistants heard PB was in she rushed out to see him, she has become quite fond of him.

I was thinking about Peanut butter the other day. Poor little man. I really hope he is soon well.

Thank you for thinking of him.

urine scald? :/

I did look that up. Doesn't seem to be his case as only the tip of his penis is red. Also, urine scald would be a secondary issue, would still have to find the cause. However, in researching urine scald I did get the info that boys can get calcium build-up on the tips of their penises! So, I will be mentioning that to the vet when I take PB's urine sample in. Thanks for pointing me in this direction.

Two more hours until I have to collect Peanut Butter's urine sample in time for his appt with the vet. This should be fun, never having done it before!

Please give him something fresh to each, put him on a clear surface and wait ... and wait... and wait... ideally until he has made several pees. suck the up with syringe and store in the fridge. Please be aware that urine changes quite quickly, so urine samples that are not fresh could provide misleading results, especially with the glucose levels (warning from a piggy speciatlist vet).

Thanks Wiebke. His apt is at 10:20am and I am planning to start the collection process at 9:20am. Would that be fresh enough?

It's official, Peanut Butter has a UTI. There was blood, protein and bacteria in his urine sample, but no crystals. He is now on 2 weeks of Bactrim (Septrin) and then we'll do another urine sample. We couldn't send the current sample to the lab for culturing to see what the bacteria was because PB refused to wee until he was in the hands of the vet at which point he promptly weed in the dish and pooped in it too!

His dental didn't go well either, as he flicked his tongue at the last minute and the vet managed to cut him a little. She was devastated not having cut him before in the 2 years she's being doing his dentals. She gave him an injection of pain relief and he still has the Tramal drops I'm giving him at home.

I have Critical Care on hand but nothing seems to make PB lose his appetite thank goodness. He was eating cos lettuce at the vet's right after his dental. And he continues to stuff his face at home as usual.

PB and his friend Hazelnut are together sharing the exact same environment all the time except when PB is at the vet's for his dental work. How can one piggy develop a UTI and not the other? Or is it likely Hazelnut has the same thing and I should get him checked out? I have seen many piggy owners on here with UTIs. Can these shed some light on the likelihood of both piggies having an UTI? Thank you.

I really hope he gets better soon. Poor thing being cut. I hope it did not hurt too much.
