Hi all,

Just wondering if its safe to feed carrot and cucumber peel if its been washed. My dad makes a salad and gives the piggies all the peels when I'm not looking grrr. They scoff it down naturally.

Well, I chop the carrot rather than peeling it, and then wash it thoroughly and the only problems I've had is over-eager piggies trying to crawl over me (we've always loved you hooman, always...are those BLUEBERRIES?!) but it's mainly up to you:nod:I doubt you'll have any problems!

I usually wash and peel (ive had a kidney transplant so I'm obsessed with washing veg even if I'm gunna peel it lol) and cut into chunks too but they only get carrot every so often (i thought until recently) I cant get them to eat blueberries at all, strawberries get gobbled up in seconds though lol.

i leave the peel on my cucumber..... never thought to remove it so hope its ok lol !

:agr:

I just wash the outsides... they've not got me peeling just yet (they're working on training me to be a top slave, though :)))

I also just wash everything thoroughly.
In fact Eddi goes through the fresh veg, picks out the cucumber pieces, eats the skin off (how does he even do that), and drops the rest on the floor of the cage.

Secretly I peel the carrots cos i eat the rest that they dont get but you cant tell Patchy & Coco cos they would be terribly offended that they had to share with someone so "beneath" them lol. Shhh!

My piggies get both carrot and cucumber with peel on. And sometimes if I've been peeling carrots for human consumption (yes, not all the veg in the fridge is owned by the piggies) I give them a handful of carrot peel as a treat. No-one has ever complained yet.

I do, however, "peel" celery to remove the strings and I also cut it into small chunks so that there is no choking hazard from "strings"

Yes, they can eat that, provided that the veg has been washed before. I also give the carrot peel from our human cooking to my guinea pigs although I never peel cucumber for myself!

I peel celery too, I never thought about them being a choking hazard until reading threads on this forum but since i get the strings stuck in my own teeth i figured they could too but i can pic mine out with a toothpick and they cant.

I should clarify i peel the celery for the guinea pigs not for myself and my family lol. I swear I'm only just a liitle bit picky (and probably a little nutso) with peel :(

Actually, there are some things that guinea pigs can and very happily eat that we often throw away:
- the leafy bits on strawberries.
- banana skins (preferably organic); more so than actually the fruit - banana skins contain exactly the same amount of nutrients and trace elements that the fruit.
- whole sweetcorn cobs including silks and husk.
- broccoli stems and - in small quantities and with very careful introduction as part of a mix as they can cause severe bloating if a piggy is not used to them - cauliflower leaves.
- the pods from shelled fresh garden peas.
- rinsed carrot, sweet potato, parsnip, turnip or swede peel (the latter varieties are usually not a favourite veg with most piggies, though)
- washed cucumber peel
- rinsed apple or pear peel
- soft herb stems from parsley, coriander/cilantro, basil, mint and dill.

Thats very interesting to know Wiebke, thanks for that. Will stay away from those cauliflower leaves though i think. My piggies actually love brocolli stem but wont eat the florets. They only get it rarely though. They seem to love all the foods they shouldnt eat to often.

It's the way we love chocolate! But of course they love their salads too; I sat in the cage with their salad and suddenly they loved me.

We cant have chocolate to often? Oh no! I've been doing it all wrong :(
