I read that the vitamin D3, that is in Pellets is not vegan and it is the one exception to the guinea pigs diet. As D3 is produced by sunlight but as alot of our piggies are indoors they can't produce there own.

I rarely give my piggies pellets because I never saw a reason for why it was necessary.

I guess I found my reason, anyone have any views on this?

I believe it aids digestion or helps the kidney/ liver function... can't quite remember :(.

It's something we discussed in my pelletless thread. There's varying thoughts on how "necessary" it is as some pigs on a pelletless diet don't go outside and don't have issues. I think for the simple reason it is generally deemed a necessary vitamin, the pigs on a pelletless diet should perhaps aim to go outdoors at least twice a week or a small amount of pellets offered once or twice a week.

Vitamin D aids the absorption of calcium.

I'd be interested in hearing from Petra or Spishkey on this, as it's more common to feed a pelletless diet where they are.
