Hi, Do guinea pigs Need pellets daily? because Some websites say that a healthy guinea pig does not require pellets, and if it is a part of their diet, try and slowly remove it from their diet.
Hmmm I’m not entirely sure. What I vaguely know is that they do contain some vitamins/minerals essential to piggies. I think there may be a select few who don’t feed them daily.
Other people will be able to advise you more comprehensively.
Some people are able to provide enough forage to balance out the nutrients needed for a Guinea Pigs diet. Erin’s ark pet care website has a very good section on the benefits and negatives of a pellet free diet.
I don’t think they’re needed exactly but I think it may be hard to get all the correct nutritional levels without them completely. I only feed a small amount of grain free low calcium nuggets 2-3 times a week. They get a huge amount of hay and they also get lots of grass and a few veggies.
Generally pigs without nuggets are a lot lighter weight wise and as I have a very small pig already I worry about her losing too much. The weights of my lot are between 850-1150 so they’re quite a bit lighter than most other pigs on pellet diets.
I think there are some health benefits to being nugget free (urinary tract wise) so that’s why we’re doing it for Iggy
