Are pellets necessary when feeding hay and a variety of vegetables?

They’re not necessary as such. I think there are one or two people on here who don’t feed pellets at all.

I stopped feeding pellets when my guinea pigs got sludge, so far they are doing better. But in saying that I have purchased a bag of soy and grain free pellets just today and will give only as treats in very small amounts. The amount will depend on how their wee goes. Any hint of sludge and I will cut back or cut out if necessary.

I use pellets (grain free) but very sparingly.
I did try stopping all together for a while but found alll the piggies lost a little weight - nothing alarming, but I feel that as they get older the extra 'easy' calories are not a bad thing.
But it's personal choice really - I know it is certainly possible for them to do well without pellets.
I also just worry a little about the vitamin content of the fresh they get, and feel with pellets it is more certain that they are getting the essential vitamins and minerals.
