I have been advised to use pellets for my guinea pigs as they are supposed to have all nutirents needed and something else that they need but isn't included in museli types. Coul you shed any light on what that could be and also is there a brand name of pellets I could use as apposed to large retail chains own make.

Just had a thought.. do you have to keep to the same food they've had for months?

A high quality pellet has a higher fibre content than anything else which is ideally what a piggie needs. I don't know what the extra ingredient would be in pellets, I'm not sure there is one. The reason pellets are preferred over mix is that it prevents piggies picking out what they like and leaving the rest so they get all the nutrients from the food instead of just the ones that taste nice. Another reason is that mixes tend to include seeds which pigs don't need and could possibly be a choking hazard.
The best pellet brands are cavy cuisine and science selective, unfortunately you have to be very lucky to find a pet store that stock these, they are available on the internet from sphsupplies.
After that you've got supa burgess guinea excel which is widely available in shops and some vet offices, pets at home nuggets have almost identical ingredient content to supa excell but theyre cheaper. It's all up to you on what you think is best or the amount of money you want to spend. Mine are on the supa excell, they were on pets at home nuggets but I dont have a local pets@home anymore so needed something that was more readily available.
To answer your last question, you don't need to keep them on the same food they've ha for months as long as you change them over gradually to the new food. Mix the two together and decrease thir original food over about 2 weeks or so. Took me ages to get one of my boys to like their new pellets, but he eats them now.

Thank you for the reply. I feel clued up now.

Another question though. I was given a trial size bottle of vitamin to put over food. Do I need to use this. Surely their diet would cover every thing :-\

Was it in the pets at home pack? I got one of those when I got my boys but never tried it, wasn't sure if it would make their pellets mushy or something, have still got it somewere. Their diet should cover all their vitamin and nutrient needs especialy if they're getting a good selection of veg but I agree with Sehnsucht, it wouldn't harm them to try it, as long as it doesn't go into their water. Vit C in water goes off quite quickly I think.

You could try Science Selective, the website will send you a free sample, as they are still only young, thats what mine were on till around 9 months, only changed after that because they were alfalfa based so not as good for older piggies. I then got them on to Wagg Optimum Pellets, you can pick these up in most supermarkets.

we tried ours on science select, and they wouldnt touch them :(

its not very often ours will touch pellets at all even if we mix them with the rest of the food they dig it out and ignore it
