So I have been at my wits end with mice eating in the wall and have been lead to use peppermint oil to deter the mice from entering. After placing the oils I have realized it’s a bit stronger than I had anticipated and it’s in the same room as the piggies I don’t really have anywhere else I can place them. They have an elevated cage on the way which will lift them off the ground and across the room farther. How bad could this oil be for the pigs?

Anything with a strong smell like that would be irritating to a guinea pig's delicate respiratory system and probably quite distressing as they live in a world of subtle and important piggy smells, it would have the same effect on the piggies as on the mice but the piggies cannot run away from it :(

Walking around the apartment the only place where I get that strong smell is where I placed the oil. The guinea pig side doesn't appear to give off that smell. And they seem to be eating normally etc.

I don't want to hurt my pigs but I also don't know what else to do because I have no where to put them besides my living room. And even with an elevated cage they will still be in the same room.

Have you contacted your local council. I had a problem with mice several years ago and couldn't get rid of them but the council sorted it out quickly. It did involve poison traps, but it kept the pigs safe.

Guinea pigs' sense of smell is far better than ours. Even if you can't smell it near their cage it is likely to be affecting your piggies.

I have contacted them and their advice was they are in your walls oh well. Deal with it so I am trying to deter them from one entrance spot just so happens it's in the same damn room.

Until I can move pigs or something else I have removed the cotton balls with oil away and put them in the trash. Windows are open. Hopefully no issues. It was only in place for a few hours

i have used rentokil, when i had a shock at 5am in the morning a mouse appearing around the kettle ! it turns out the cat had bought the mice in.rentokil were very effective.....sorry the council were unhelpful.

Also in an emergency you can always place your piggies somewhere like a bath (lined with towels), etc.
I also have a very basic 100cm cage that is flat packed in my garage - it is not ideal and not a long term solution, but if gives me some flexibility if I suddenly need to relocate or contain a piggy for a short period.
