Hey guys, just a quick question...

I'm going on holiday for 12 days next month and I was thinking of boarding my pets at one of the pet 'hotels' down here in Cornwall. My only worry is all the hutches are outdoor and my guys are indoor piggies, always have been. Do you think this could make them ill through the cold or scare them?

I was going to ask a friend but I don't trust non piggie people with my pets! x

Hi there. I have to say that at this time of the year I would be loath to put piggies that are used to living indoors outside, even if the weather is mild during the daytime, nights and early mornings definitely have a nip in the air.

Have you tried calling any pet hotels locally to see whether they can offer indoor accommodation? I run a hotel in Kent and our main piggy accommodation is housed within a dedicated shed, however, I do understand that people have piggies indoors (as we do ourselves) so I do offer a limited amount of boarding space in my home. If you find somewhere you are happy with, perhaps suggest taking your own cage for your little guys if they can keep it in the house.

Good luck finding some, I know just how difficult it can be.

As above really, i wouldnt put indoor pigs outside, certainly not at this time of year, piggies cannot cope with changes in temperature and in would be a huge shock to the system putting them outside at this time of year, its so cold and damp during the night now i think i would have a bad effect on their health. as suggested ring around to find somewhere who will house them indoors.

Thanks for taking the time to help :) really appreciate it.

I worry about my pigs not being warm enough indoors, and the thought of them going outside makes me feel really uneasy. My partner said it woud be good for them, which I doubted so thanks for agreeing with me!

I have sent off 8 emails this morning asking about indoor housing but I've yet to hear back. They are in a C&C cage each since they dont get on so I think it would be a bit of an issue to take my huge cage with me!

One place has a shed type area I think they house piggers in, although I think a shed will still be colder than what they are used to :(

Thank you for the luck, think I'm going to need it! x

If you were to go for the shed option you could always take some cardboard boxes to pop inside the hutch and ask the owner to fill this with lots of hay and also put more over the top of it - a snuggle safe heat pad would also be a good idea, even if it's just for over night used. I would still be a little wary of putting indoor piggies in a shed at this time of the year.

As regards your C&C cage, have you got any friends who might have an indoor cage you could borrow? Alterntively have a look in the paper/free ads you can sometimes pick up second hand ones pretty cheaply. I would have thought that most places would have had at least one indoor cage available for emergency health issues, so they may be able to supply one.

What we have done for piggies coming who are used to C&C cages is to use our largest indoor cage and add some extra levels with wooden hidey houses/hammocks and I have also used a bendy wooden tunnel to make a ramp to allow the piggies to let themselves out into a secure metal run for extra exercise (the are obviously in a secure room. Make sure you stress to the pet hotel that the piggies are used to lots of free time anyone worth their salt will make sure they get plenty of exercise.

Thanks guys, Ive decided there is no way I can let them go outside.

The ideas of how to make the shed warm are great too, I'll def keep them in mind :)

I'll have a look in the newspaper, freeads etc and see if I can get some normal cages, and I am going to get on the phone now and see what I can come up with! x

It does look and sound good from the website, but you really can't tell without visiting it. If you are considering this one then go and visit it armed with a long list of questions. You need to see what the housing is like, what condition the pets are in that are there and what the people are like who care for them. Make sure you think of all the questions you can, put them on a long list and ensure you ask them all and get them answered! Good luck :))

This is really good advice. I always ask people to visit and encourage them to ask as many questions as they need to, however 'silly' they may be. I always have piggies in my house if they need to be inside. I think indoors means indoors. They like company and noises............Can they really hear the fridge door opening or that bag of goodies being rustled from inside the shed lol..........I don't think so and that's the kind of thing they'll miss, oh and don't forget radio 2 whether they like it or not!

Hello,

I am fairly new to this site and really impressed at how friendly and helpful GP lovers are on here!

If you get stuck finding anywhere I am more than happy to have your two to stay for the 12 days in November.

They can stay indoors in their own room away from my 4 sows! I have an outside run so they can have some time on the lovely Cornish grass.

I am not a boarding house, just a private individual, so obviously there is no charge - just their food.

I am 45 minutes from Newquay Airport (near Hayle) so if you are interested just let me know.

You are very welcome to visit!

Sal
