Hi All,

Well I went out today with the family once Emily had finished school. We went food shopping and then popped into a pet shop which used to be an old swimming pool so as you can imagine it's quite a size. They have buns mixed with pigs :'( in dirty hutches. As soon as you go in to the rabbit and pig area all of them come to the wire mesh and want to be taken home, it's heartbreaking. There was one pig there, he was a crested tri-colour and was such a big ol' boy. Peter took a shine to him, we have seen him before about 2 months ago. Poor thing was desperate to be taken home. He was in with another pig of a similar size who kept rumbling at him and mounting the rabbit! 98) So I asked the women who worked there how old were the boys, she said 'oh about 12 months' there was no way in hell they were that young! His teeth were not in great shape, quite long but he seemed healthy enough, I'd say for his size he was about 2-2.5 years old!

I said to Peter you know, we shouldn't get him, it just makes them buy more (see I'm learning). I know it's heartbreaking but in the long run we aren't rescuing we are just funding them! But I feel I can't leave it there, would the RSPCA do anything? I feel they won't find a home in a petshop, they should be in a rescue. Peter was even looking at hutches so we could have him and his little mate. But no I firmly put my foot down as much as it pained me to do so!

We then went to P@H, Emily likes looking at Pigs, I heard one of the workers giving the wrong information on cold water fish (which I have a tankfull of) she said to feed them just to flakes of food per fish per day! ROFL If I did that to my fish then they would go mad! I've bred fish out of my tank (lemon tetra and cat fish) so I must be doing something right!

I also came across a woman buying a Nero 3 for 2 rabbits! ? I said to her I house one guinea in a Nero 3 and he is fine, was trying to say to her look it's not big enough but the worker at P@H didn't mention it! It's so frustrating, poor buns where gorgeous too!
I think I just go to pet shops to confirm what I already know that some of them don't have a clue! (Not all I may add, some are quite good!)

Anyways just thought I'd ask about the pigs, feel so sad for them!

:tickedoff: Poor piggies :'(

Good job for not buying them it's tough but you have to do it O0

Maybe you could contact the RSPCA? It probably won't do anything but it's worth a shot right? :-\

It's in Liverpool one of the worst I've been too. Also they have koi carp. Peter has kept them when he lived with his folks in Norfolk but now we have the girls he decided not to keep them and gave them to his brother. The carp in the shop are gasping for breathe. It's so overcrowded. I could blow a fuse just watching them!

I know I shouldn't even go in, but I do to see if things have improved. I have reported them to the RSPCA but nothing has been done. Will try again tomorrow! The Buns and Pigs didn't even have fresh veggies!

Poor pigs and bunnies :'(
Your right though if you buy them they will just get more in
Its so sad.
Ive only had my pig since sunday but since joining this forum and having ollie ive all of a sudden got a huge amount of love for guinea pigs.

Well....

There are the occasional good pet shop yes, but I do not think any petshops should sell animals to be honest!

It would just be so much better if there were breeders and rescues. Thats it. None of this middleman stuff where if a bad breeder gives pets at home a box of guineas and they die the next day, they dont use them anymore...so the breeders move on to somewhere else and no-one ever knows.

I really do think if these cr*ppy breeders were exposed, and didnt have the petshops to hide behind, we could all do so much more to make a difference to stopping them breed in the first place...

To be honest with you hun, I would go back and get the guinea/s...Even if you rehome him/them yourself, and he/they dont stay with you....thats what I would do...

I agree with what you are saying, that if you buy him there will be replacement, but you have clearly been thinking about him, and if you want to, then I'm sure he would like a nice life with an animal lover who treats him like royalty, or be sold off cheap to some idiots who dont have a clue!

You see guineas all the time in petshops, but he has suck in your mind....even if you neuter him and keep him....I have a feeling you should consider it :)

Yeah Donna I got my first pig Sunshine in June and he was from a pet shop. I didn't know any better then but this place has educated me, although overjoyed to have Sunshine he is a gorgeous boy so I'm glad I did get him.

PP I agree, no pet shop should sell animals. The only good ones I know either don't sell animals or concentrate soley on aquatics. We get all out aquatic stuff from a family run shop in liverpool, they really care about the fish and when Finding Nemo came out they wouldn't sell clowns to anyone who asked for Nemo Fish! Good for them! Did make me smile though!

It's an idea for me to rehome him. I just don't think he is going to get that option there. Everyone wants the babies. It doesn't bother me (even though my pigs are really young right now) be nice to have a couple of old man to match the hubby! :D

Will have a word with Peter, think he had his heart set on him. Thanks for your advice PP!

It's the hardest thing in the world to walk away from an animal in need.

I went into a pet shop recently, stinky and loads of flies about. I saw a piggie with quite bad mite infestation. Just wish I'd kept my mouth shut and bought him but instead had a confrontation with the shop owner and was asked to leave. She showed no concern for his welfare at all as you might expect. I shall never know what happened to that piggie and his little face haunts me even now. :'(

There is no right or wrong thing to do in this situation, your heart tells you to get them out, your head tells you to leave them there so there is no space for the next victim. It's the c**p side of being an animal lover and it's hell. :(

I'd like to think that in my life time pet shops would be banned from selling live animals but I suspect it will only ever be a dream. I don't know what the solution is, perhaps we just need to educate our kids and spread the word of rescue. Who knows :(

I agree about educating the young ones. I've started on my daughter and her friends. Her school actually have a rabbit, not sure on the breed but he is fairly big white with black. The first thing I do when I go to the school is check on him. He is housed in a tiny hutch, no run, no fresh veggies and I think why are schools doing this?

I've offered to take him in, even though I know nothing of rabbits but I could give him a better life than that. The head said that he was keep me in mind once the children loose interest. Imagine the projects the children could do about rabbits and other small animals. Emily is going to be studying animals and their young and it gave me an idea to write an informative guinea pig and rabbit book (incorperated the rabbit section because of the school bun.) I wouldn't mind taking my pigs in, not for children to hold just to show them so they can learn.

I think schools could do more to educate children, it's not just about the three r's! Ah sorry for going on, I'll probably end up like Carla Lane when I grow up! :D
