I have actually got to say a big thanks to the customer service at a well known pet store.
After terrible rain last night my poor rabbits hutches were flooded (even though i covered the front the rain came through the sides :( and roof) after complaining to the customer service team.. i have only had the hutches a matter of weeks.. they are loaning me 2 indoor cages, til they dry out and giving me 2 hutch huggers! so that they will stay dry in future.. I am over the moon with the outcome.
Also... (and I did try all rescues first, so please be nice.. I always get my pets from rescues.. these were the first we have got from pet shop) one of the baby guinea pigs we got last week, has terrible sniffles, and they are paying for him to go to the vets tonight as well..
So, please wish me luck at the vets.. really hoping its nothing bad.. x

Big thumbs up and all the best to the poor little sniffer!

If your pet is going to their vets please read anything they ask you to sign. I have heard from several people who were asked to sign over their pet back to the pet store for treatment and unfortunately were not allowed to visit and some did not get their pet back.

If you have only had the hutches a couple of weeks I am surprised they are leaking at all! Gladthe company is providing huggers but to be honest I would be asking for a refund or replacement hutches.

I hope your guinea pig gets better and remains in your care during treatment.

thanks everyone.
Well, we are back from the vets (a local one which the pet shop footed the bill) and it looks like he has ringworm :(
He has given us some medication. Hopefully it hasnt been passed on to the others but if it has they say they will pay for the medication also.. (hopefully they will stick to that!)
They lent me 2 indoor hutches to keep the rabbits in til the outdoor ones dry out and the covers can be fitted. So, they are quite happy and dry and the moment
I'm just happy not to be fobbed off, and have to say I was pleased that within half an hour of me sending an e-mail, i had a telephone call from company. They are saying the hutches arent faulty and that it was because of the bad rain. Although my guinea pig hutch didnt leak through like that, suppose its just the cheap way they are made these days, and fingers crossed with the covers on, it should never be a problem again! x

ooh thats terrible! no, they didnt do that with me. They have a local vet that they use and just asked me if I wanted to use that one, as he specialises in guinea pigs or use my own. I used theirs as it is closer anyway, and the 2 babies werent registered with a vet yet anyway. he was excellenet and as the vet has piggies himself, knows what its like to worry. Not sure what the sniffles are, but what i thought was a scab due to the runny nose, he thinks is the start to ringworm, so at least it is getting sorted quickly. That must be horrible not to get their pet back :(

Glad you are happy with the way the company has treated you

Ringworm spores can survive in wood for a long time so I would suggest a strong anti fungal disinfectant on the hutches before the animals go back in. Make sure the animals are kept in a room away form people and other animals to prevent the infection spreading further.

Also it can spread to humans so wear rubber gloves when handling and make sure your clothes are changed and washed after handling them.

What medication have they given you to treat the ringworm?

If that guinea is housed with another guinea they should really both be treated at the same time as it prevents the infection spreading back if the other one develops it.

cos they are so young, they are currently indoors, so they are in a ferplast cage. I got some hutch cleaner, like a disinfectant type?
They have been in the run on outside where the bigger boys play (guinea pigs) and the rabbits too.. but the vet said not to treat unless any symptoms show? the bottle says itrafungol 5ml i have to give Neo 0.15ml once a day.
I'm going to get an apron and some gloves tomorrow (latex free.. dunno where to get them tho.. I'm allergic to latex) and making sure the kids dont handle them. He told me not to seperate the babies, because if the other was to get them, he would anyway as they have been together so long, and they would get distressed being seperated, cos they dont like being alone.
I'm praying we dont get it also, the vet said its really bad if a human gets it. Knowing what we are like we blooming will! x

Itrafungal is good stuff. My vet gave me that when two of mine had ringworm. A five week treatment. One week on, One week off. Cleared up brilliantly very quickly with no further problems. x

Intrafungal should sort it out but I would keep the affected one and his friend well away from everyone esle unltil treatment has finished.

A standard hutch cleaner brought from pet shops is not usually anti fungal, you need to get some virkon or jeyes fluid (particalr fave of mine as it kills everything and smells like creosote be sure to wear gloves and rinse well and air before animals are going back in) I would do all your hutches and the run with it.

One thing I always do is spray my hands and arms with ..now I know this sounds odd..... the atheletes foot spray before handling piggies with fungal infections like ringworm as the spray is antifungal and can help stop the spread of it. It has always worked for me when we have had fungal piggies come into the rescue and we have never had a case spread.

If you are careful about handling and cleaning (make sure any waste from their cage is double bagged and not disposed of anywhere near other animals) use a good antifungal disinfectant and keep them isolated away from other animals and only handle them when you need to (I know it is sad not cuddling but the more they are handled the more the risk of spread)

Good luck and intrafungal is good stuff I hope they both get the all cear soon :)

Jyese Fluid smells like public toilets, but the smell wears off and it is great stuff as you say, and is a whole lot cheaper than Virkon. I laughed when I read about you spraying yourself, but actually you probably have a good point, it is very contagious, and that is a good idea. I was a bit neurotic about infection control with mine, and managed to contain it well. x

this happened to someone I knew and they actually got brand new hutches from the store and if I'm right its the same one you went to, as if you can get brand new hutches out of them it is best to throw the old ones(any wooden ones you have) out incase the spores are in there as they can lie dormant for some time.

and if you start getting any dry patches on you or your family that starts to spread get to the doctors asap, it spreads very easy i got it even after I was "bansided" from handling the infected pigs while they were getting treated and its not nice.

one question though how has it gone from the sniffles to ringworm? and have you had anything for the pigs sniffles?

The pet store havent given me new cages, but they are in a plastic one not wooden, as they are so young i have them indoors at the mo. They have been outside twice though, where the older ones go, and also where the rabbits go..?

The vet didnt give me anything for the sniffles.. is it not connected to the ringworm? If i can work out how to get a pic on I will do, but will try and explain.

When I got them (after trying to get babies from rescues etc unsuccessfully first) he had what i first thought was a tiny white patch of fur next to his nose. The first day I didnt handle them (so they would settle). Then the next day on closer inspection I realised it was actually a tiny bald spot only about 1mm, but he was sneezing and had a runny nose (which I thought was the sawdust he had been on) I only use hay, and the next day he was still sneezing. Then by yesterday it had got quite crusty and is a perfect circle, although not bloody, like other pictures I have seen, but I dont know if this is because he is not scratching?
