What happens to all the animals in pet shops that don't sell? There must be a time limit on how long they keep them in the shop and I have always wondered and worried about what happens to them after that. I believe some breeders take them back but what do they do with them?

The petshop where we got Misty and Sooty the woman just gives them away for free when they get to a certain age :-\ She asked my mum if she know anyone that wanted 2 adult boars that she couldn't sell.

P@H put them in the rescue/adoption bit of the shop. I once asked why a piggie was in there for adoption, and was told it was because she was ugly! So I bought her home, and she's not ugly at all!

It just depends on the pet shop really. Some keep them until they sell, lowering the price or for free. Some, like PAH do sometimes, put them into the adoption bit..I think some send them back to the breeder too...who knows what happens to them then :-\

I got Pudsey from the P@H rescue centre as he is allergic to woodshavings, there is a great guy at P@H St Helens who really cares about the pigs. :)

My P@H doesnt have a adoption bit. It's a massive one though!

Hmm neither does my local one. I'm going to a different one tomorrow though to see if they have one there...

I have NEVER seen any piggies in my adoption section at any p@h 's :P

I was told they get sent back to the breeder to breed from, and that was from a reliable source!

All businesses (which is what petshops are) do things differently. The one where I got Sunshine from don't house that many per time so they have a quicker turn over.

The bad one in Liverpool for anyone that knows the area and if I say fisheries then it should ring a bell, I wouldn't be suprised if they send them back to the breeder, however they had a three year old pig, probably abandoned there as they seem to take in a lot of unwanted rabbits and hamsters so God knows what happens to the animals that don't get given a new home. :(

Hi Louise, Lister drive is disgusting, you should have seen the kittens there the other week :'( none of their pigs look younger than 1year to me, i reckon they just keep them until they sell and dont get any babies in until theres room. x

Hi Emma,

I've seen loads of kittens there, so gorgeous but so wrong. Emily is always taken with them. Last time we went they had some pigs, I went the day we lost Cuzzy, didn't think I'd get one there and I was right although they had a crested chocolate rex which was lovely but I just couldn't bring myself to give them money. Wee piglets where being trod on by rabbits as well and were yelping in pain. I told the woman who said 'ok' I should be more assertive and stand my ground and say no move them now!

The koi are always gasping for air, it's like stepping into hell! I refuse to go now. That one up your way is awful as well, I think it is on Field Lane in Fazakerley, I went in and immediately went back out, it's basically a portakabin with animals in! Horrible!

x

i dont go into pet shops really, i go to the one couple of houses down from me but they dont sell animals but they promote rescues :) i did used to go p@h often to look around but havent been in months :)

Was going to mention that one but didnt know you knew it, thats worse than lister drive :( last time they had a mum and babies i didnt see them because I'm not tall enough but Jay wanted to buy one, theres no way i could give them money. Ive actually reprted them before but nothings been done. Have you seen the size of the tanks they keep the snakes in? I dont think the fish part is that bad at lister drive, the fish are well fed, its still bad but not as bad as the pigs and rabbits and other small animals :( they do good cages etc though! x

Emily always wants to look at 'new' pigs...lol I tell her we can see loads of pigs here but she likes looking. I was really suprised with Pudsey as he had been looked after at P@H and was out the back on blankets. He'd had lots of handling, I think it helps having piggy lovers who work there. :)

Emma, I went in when I was looking for a friend for Sunshine, we then went to P@H Aintree but they had none and ended up in St Helens. I've seen the snake tanks, terrible!

The fish part in Lister must have improved then, I won't go in anymore just incase. The Pet Shop near Asda in Hunts Cross is where I got Sunshine from and it's pretty good I get my hay from there. :)

Yes theres a girl in the aintree P@H who deals with the pigs, rabbits and hammys. She actually knows me by name ;D she said if she was working on comission she'd give me a cut because she's sold me the most ;D she handles the pigs well and talks to them like babies etc. She gives good advice too even though she's young :) will have to go have a mooch in that pet shop :) i like looking if its not cruel! x

The local garden centre rehomes them to home rescues like me or local animal charities on the island.
