I was on another guinea pig forum and came across a post regarding the petstore chain Petco in America - apparently they are holding an event where small animals are entered in races. This includes putting guinea pigs in the large rollerball toys that we know are dangerous for their spines. I don't understand why anyone would think a small animal would find it fun to enter a race like this, I think a lot of guinea pigs would be scared to death (considering some of them have such timid natures). I hate the fact animals are being used for humans entertainment here - it's not fair to force them to do things like this when they can't speak up for themselves.

Please have a look at the petition and sign, I think it was started by someone on Guinea Lynx forum.

I use those balls for my hamsters once a week only for cleaning them out but wouldn't think there suitable for any other animals, i don't even think there ok for gerbils as there tails can get caught in the holes and rip of :'(

Hi i think that is a brilliant idea !!! :D

Absolutely disgusted.

Would there be any point in us all objecting to Vetco via email to let them know how dangerous this can be for piggies? Perhaps if enough complain they may re-consider in the future?

Well I think that there's no way it would do any harm, so it sounds like a good idea to me. Has anyone got their e-mail address?

No of course I don't mind, thanks for doing that - I copied the original post from another forum too, the more people that sign the better.
Re writing/emailing Petco, this thread on Guinea Lynx might help http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39940 it includes an example letter that could be used.

We just sent this:

I understand Petco are promoting another Hamster Ball Derby in Petco stores across America on Saturday, September 8, 2007.
Regarding the Critter Run after the Hamster Ball Derby - we are concerned with the advertising/promotion of using a ball for Guinea Pigs and Chinchillas. The spine of a Guinea Pig is extremely delicate and can be easily injured when put in the position that the ball places it. Even the biggest ball forces the Guinea Pig to bend in a way that is harmful to their spine. Another hazard to the Guinea Pig and Chinchilla is the spacing of the slits in the ball for so called ventilation. A Guinea Pig or Chinchilla foot can easily get caught in the slit while the ball continues rolling, therefore causing the foot to break or possibly be severed. Both animals are sensitive to high temperatures and may overheat in the ball. Guinea Pigs have a different spine formation than a hamster, rat, or any other animal that may use a ball. Putting a Guinea Pig in a ball also causes undue stress to them and may cause illness.
PLEASE reconsider advertising or promoting the use of a ball for Guinea Pigs in the Critter Run.
Petco will be setting a tremendous example if they step down from this cruel and innapropriate 'sport'.
Thank you.

Most of this was paraphrased from a sample letter from someone on the Guinea Lynx site, with a couple of extra additions.

Petition signed by both Julie and I.

I think I'm in trouble on the other site I posted this on :-\
It was a common social networking site...don't know if I'm allowed to mention it by name. I posted it to the three guinea pig fan clubs I'm a member of, and one of them has had it's page disabled by the look of it pending a complaint...at least that's what I assume. Though what for I don't know. I just put that I thought it was cruel, surely I'm allowed my own opinion.... :'(

If they really cared about animals, they wouldn't do such a thing. They're obviously out for the money rather than thinking of their reputation because no one should contribute to something like this, and they're not thinking of the animals welfare. Most ridiculous thing I've heard of. A pet is for you're own personal enjoyment and comfort and saftey in some cases, not for the novelty of something that could harm and kill, because once that spine breaks, that animal has no chance, and what will they do then? Try telling the little kid watching, why that animal isn't moving inside the ball, watch the orginisers of the event squirm in their shoes tryin to get out of that one. It'll backfire if it goes ahead. They'll be out of business, believe me. >:(

Marty and I got a reply back from Petco which was a standard we don't belileve it's cruel, blah blah, approved by chief vet surgeon blah blah, have been doing this for years and never have been informed of an incident blah blah, pet care is foremost in their minds blah blah, we love our animals blah. Clearly not remotely interested.

The feckers! Pardon my Scouse I would say worse! I'm so annoyed, it's not right, it's not fun and its irresponsible! Oh everyday I'm turning into a pet shop hater! The anti pet shop brigade are winning me over 100%!

You know i don't even what to get my supplies from pet shops now. I'm finding myself shopping in Wilkos and Tesco for food and supplies. I can't bare to give them money!

Voting with your feet is the only thing these establishments understand :)

Exactly, and if I need a hutch or cage I'll use Ebay...ah I've got it all planned out!

Are petco American?

Yes, I think so...

Zooplus, SPH Supplies and Bunny Basics are all good UK online alternatives, and Thistle Cavies have great bits and pieces for guineas :)

Thanks for that! I do look at Zoo plus a lot and of course Gorgeous Guineas! :-D
