I've realised why Gemma and I think P@H Blackburn is ok, we've not been at weekends - I just popped today and it was heaving with people buying animals.

There were two guineapigs in a pen with a male rabbit. Well one pig was rumble strutting and trying to hump the other which was very pretty. I was wondering who to say something to when I heard an elderly lady asking if they had any female guineapigs as the two out were males. The assistant said he'd get one 'out the back' for her - next thing I saw was lady being shown the pretty pig from the pen. So I spoke to the lady and said I'd just seen it being humped and did she know they weren't that good at sexing in here. She said it wasn't the same one, it had been brought out for her but could I check the sex for her. So I did and it was a girl. Lady and I chatted for a few mins, she'd got another pig and a rabbit who lived together (decided it wasn't the right time to lecture her) and she said they were living in their winter accommodation but in summer she had a huge hutch and run in the garden for them. She'd lost her 6 year old pig this last week and wanted a friend for her remaining one. Obviously a caring owner.

Well after she'd gone I went and checked the pen and guess what - little boar was running around squeaking for his missing mate ::) >:(

At least the lady had been warned.....

They really know nothing

But as long as people continue to buy from them it will never end. All we can do is to continue highlighting the problems and hope that people will choose to source their guinea pigs from more reliable people >:(

You did what you could Kayjay, good for you.

I think that pet shops should been banned from selling small furries(mice, hampsters, rabbits, guinea pigs even cats & dogs etc) because they sell unknown sexed or wrongly sexed animals that go to people that haven't got a clue!To then return with the 'off spring' helping to make more profit!,there should be more education about all the little furries that need rehoming in rescue places.I remember telling a few people wanting rabbits in a pet shop,i told them about a local rescue, about their "cheaper" vetted and neutered animals.i have the numbers on mobile phone! They said thanks, because they would rather rescue!

You did all you could Kathryn.... Poor woman - who knows whether her new pet is pregnant or not. At least she sounds like a caring owner - which is good if one becomes 5 in a short time!

I hate the fact the P@H keep getting away with their poor sexing. I have to be honest I haven't been in my local store for a very long time now - I find it too frustrating.

theyve wrongly sexed every pig ive had from there, theyre pathetic >:(
but ive never taken them back,i couldnt

And they charged her £19 :o and said she couldn't hold her or anything. I bought my first pig Fudge from a small petshop. The lady sat us on a chair and gave him to me to hold and gave me care advice and he cost £12. How P@H expect people to choose pets for their family without holding them I don't know.

and theyre still charging £19 and wont let anyone hold them, they just stick them straight into a box
although what annoys me is that the Kayes pet shop in nottingham charges £16 per pig and an additional £2.25 for a box which is one for carrying birds in ( narrow) >:( >:(

It sounds like i've been lucky then! My boys were from p@h, both were sexed correctally and the lady let me hold them. I checked the sex for myself before leaving with them. They told me what food they were on, and gave me general care tips. (Not that i'm sticking up for them or anything.) I think they were 2 for £35.
Sounds like some need to teach their staff properly.

yeah i think theyre two for £35 but we got our first two pigs from there and they only charged us for one...mwahaha their mistake ;D ;D

I was lucky like darkest dreaming i got 2 from pets at home, i was allowed to go into the cage with them pick all of them up about 3 times over until i decided and they are sexed correctly.

mum and I are off down there to pick up some dried fruit etc tonight ,I'm gonna sniff around the piggy cages ;D

I think Kays in town is as bad as pets at home, But have you ever seen the pet shop in Bulwell up hurts yard now that is bad on how they treat the poor animals in there :( after reporting them I have never stepped back in there.

Ive not been in there for ages and I darent in case I let rip

seriously though I agree with you about Kayes and P@h and Kayes complain about P@h? wtf...

Oh no I forgot to go in Kayes :( Ill have to go on saturday.

Those that live in notts, do you really think the pets at home is that bad? I cant stand pet shops but as they go the P@H on castle bouluevard is not that bad i think. At least P@H has some kind of reputation to protect- the independent shops are much worse IMO, Ive reported one to the RSPCA before and had an arguement with the owner of another.

I got Sooty in a box that was for putting birds in. When I opened in it the car to look at his he was squashed right in the box. I would have put him in with Misty but didn't want them to fight or anything in the car.

the P@H isnt that bad but the people there are complete retards (creepy teenagers)
they have no clue how to sex pigs, theyre covered in mites ( the pigs,lol...then again who knows) and Ive wanted to have heaps of arguements when they think they know what thyre on about, apart from the the food etc that they sell is good and the hutches are real cheap compared to other places but the pets arent cheap, then I guess if they reduced the price they would go to anyone who didnt have a clue

I would say Kayes is far worse and I cant understand why its been open so long after seeing how they house the animals for sale and the prices

that mustve been the same box put our pigs in ,its got like a pidgeon on the side?
stuff paying £2.25 per box >:( >:(

and nothing on the bottom like hay etc
Ill be going in afterwork to look around, theres some pretty white boys with red eyes that no-one seems to want in there all fluffed up and fed up and I think theres one lil female in with 4 huge rabbits >:(

I buy food and shavings from Kennelgate as they do not sell animals at all, Prices are better than pah. I try not to buy anything from pets at home although its the only place that sells timothy hay. Bowls and bottles I buy in wilco so much cheaper there for the same thing. I do use a littlerve pet shop near me for the bedding hay though its so fresh and cheap

we normally get the bales of hay from kennalgate in wollaton but its all chopped up and gives them nothing to bury themselves in,our huge bales of shavings are from there too but theyve cut the size down and are charging the same price

if you want a guy to deliver food and hay ive got the number, hes not bad priced neither and does dog food etc too

after reading about the bad pet shops makes me feel humble mine is wonderful maybe we should have a vote for the worst pet shop and maybe the best, looks like PAH is going to win the worse, cant wait for ours to open I'm going to kick ass if I find one little animals not looked after, and then walk up to our vets and complain its in the same road

I'm not sticking up for P@H but it definitely wouldn't win the worst in Blackburn. Yesterday all rabbits and pigs had food, hay and water. The little petshop in the market is shocking, no hay, no food and sometimes no water. I went in once and the guineapigs were eating shavings. The owner looks scary and I was too afraid to say anything, I know I should, but....

Pets@Home are quite good compared to that.

What is the quality of the hay from the guy who delivers? Can I have his details please?

I get my hay in bales from a farm in arnold, but it makes a bit of a mess in the car bringing it home ;D

I went in to PAH last night and i couldn't believe it.

I dont know wether anyone has seen this but in our PAH they sell a cage that is supposed to be big enough for guineas, but its not its the size down from the nero rabbit ones, well i was earwigging as usual in there and this woman wanted to house a rabbit in one of the smaller nero cages. The PAH bloke was telling her that there is no point in having a cage that small as the baby rabbit will grow out of it within weeks. The woman said that she would think about getting the big cage

Afterwards i went up to the bloke and said those cages arn't big enough for guineas let alone rabbits and he said that they do now recommend the big rabbit nero cages for 2 guineas or more.

I just hope that there isn't a lonely rabbit sat in a cramped cage tonight :(

At least the staff member was trying to talk the lady out of it. They had a 2ft hutch on special offer yesterday for £29 :o I ask you, 2 ft, it's not big enough for a hamster I dread to think if someone puts a rabbit or guineapig in it >:(

It had birds on it and was yellow and red. Misty got a bigger box maybe because he was already about 5 months and wouldn't have fitted in one. There was no hay or anything.

We've been to a P@H in Weston-Super-Mare and I would agree that whilst their bedding and accessories are cheap, the guinea pigs are pretty pricey.
The problem with places like P@H is that they are franchises and they're only run as well as the individual manager of the store wants to manage it. If they want to employ incompetent retards, then they will, unfortunately to the detriment of the welfare of any small furries that they sell. We bought our guinea pigs from a big garden centre that has a very large pet section and they were correctly sexed, they don't always have guinea pigs in, so it's not like they're on some sort of pipeline, and they came home in a big box, plenty of room, lots of hay and food in there as well as plenty of decent advise from the pets people. There was also a free check at a local vets about six weeks later. The garden centre is however, very pricey for hay, bedding and food...
Swings and roundabouts I suppose.
