I went to get some hay today and as usual the first thing i do before anything else is shoot over to see the piggies and rabbits. To my absolute disgust there was no dry food in the bowl and only one bottle with water in when there were about 7 piggies in there. The hay rack was very high up and so was the spout of the water bottle so how on earth very young and small guinea pigs were supposed to access these essential basic needs with ease? Anyone know a number for their customer complaints dept?

I simply cannot understand why a pet superstore could let this happen! I didnt say anything which is the most stupid thing i've ever done! But i knew id act irrationally and fly off the handle at them because i was so upset and angry.

:tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I once went to pets at home and noticed that the water and the hay rack were too high.So i just mentioned it to the lady at the cash till and she thanked me for telling her! O0

Contact the store manager and remind them it's illegal for the animals to be denied their basic needs. If it had been me I would have complained on the spot and not left until the animals were properly fed and watered.

Same here I would have told them but I'm a nark! ;D But seriously you are only telling them what they should know. My catchphrase is its not rocket science is it? Well it isn't even my 3 year old would know! 98)

The manager of my local one dives into the back office when she sees me but then at least they provide the basics of food, water and shelter.

This seems tio be the norm for that store, every one I go in its always the same. One store that I went in have them behind enclosed glass, lovely set up nice and airy (well it was when I went because it was all new) but you cant get to the animals which I suppose is good in one way because it stopped them being stolen and it also stops people manhandling them but it also stops you from seeing them properly and lowering the hay from the hayrack for the little ones

Have P@H stopped selling birds? They were always escaping from P@H Aintree and I used to go running to the staff to tell them! But I haven't seen any birds in there for about a year! Is it because of bird flu?

Ive noticed that they dont seem to do birds now. I thought it was just my area because there are avaries where people go to buy their birds local

I had to bollock the Truro branch for having the guineas' water bottle far too high for them. The girl did go and move it.

Well I have been took out the back of a P@H last week and came out so sad I phoned my hubby and cried.
Never posted about it as didn't see the point as apparently it's the norm for the back room to have hundreds of cages 1 on top of another stuffed with animals. The cages are all minging and was just awful. I told the manager how shocked I was and how it wouldn't hurt the staff to use the cage cleaners they sell! :tickedoff:
They gave me one of there cages for the babies when they come as want them to have lots of room but wont be using it! It wasn't a new one it was one they use from there "stock room" and he pulled a gp out of it and wacked him in a random other cage with another gp :o I said how do you no if thats not a male you've just put with a female and he just said oh i'll sort it after I've sorted you! :tickedoff:
Again I told him all this is because of that sort of stupidity but ignored me again. Anyway got the cage home and after cleaning it 7 times with cleaner and bleach I still can't remove the shite from the corners is awful. I have tried everything it is just minging. My hubby said forget it he will buy a new cage when the babies come but i'm so cross as every cage must be this bad. The smell was awful! :'(
I have informed head office about the hygiene will see what happens think they are sick of me tbh! ::)

Apparently it wasn't because of bird flu but it was interesting to see how birds were withdrawn after sales slumped. They're not going to keep stocking an animal that's not making them any money.

Sianiej - I remember seeing exactly the same thing myself in a store. The animals out the front were living in luxury compared to the ones "out back". Hamsters were in small cages stacked high on the floor and there were a couple of rabbits and guinea pigs here and there as well. The cages weren't filthy but I honestly don't think it's acceptable to house any animal like that.

Our pets at home caught fire last year and has just been reopend..they do not have birds in there as they said people buy them from there local pet shops and breeders.

I went into the new pets at home at Parkgate over the weekend.First time ive been in ..it moved when we had the floods last summer.. The pigs and rabbits are now seperated BUT they are got the piggys in massive perspex enclosures ,loads of room but..my problem was that there were young kids banging on the sides :tickedoff: I dont understand why ppl just stand their and allow their kids to do it.. Mine would never do anything like that as ive brought them up to respect all animals.. It was very upsetting.. :tickedoff:

Ah right, I had no reason to go into P@H before last June as I had no pets last time I saw birds in there was Feb 2004 so it has been a while. :)

well P@H are not going to get better if people shop in the store. After my experience I refuse to go in there for anything. I buy mu pellets hay etc online. if i need treat sticks quickly i go to tesco. The shops are a disgrace and the way they treat the animals is terrible. Someone should start a campaign against them, get petitions etc and send it all to head office. I haven't had a problem when i have called head office but still would never make me shop in there again. I wouldn't give them my money to spend on mis-treating animals the way they do. x

We go around in circles about pets at home, there have been many debates about it. I don't shop there as I don't have a really local one but one of my boys comes from P@H and I'm not going to start ranting about them because that would make me a hypocrite. :)

Hi there,
I had a bad experience yesterday at my P&H.
Heres a copy of the e-mail I sent to the R.S.P.C.A and P&H head office. I'm absolutely disgusted with their attitude :tickedoff:

I was wondering if one of your officers would pay a visit to the Tritton Road store and have a look at the Guinea Pig Housing situation and speak with the manager.
For a while now - months in fact I have been trying to tackle an ongoing problem the store staff seem to have. Despite my attempts the situation today remains unresolved which I find very sad. I will be contacting the head office for a response.
The problem is the Guinea pigs hay rack is hung on the wire which is way way too high and although full of hay it is always completely out of reach for the guinea pigs which is so sad.
I have spoken to the store manager on more than one occasion and at first they temporarily hung the hay rack on wire so it was low enough for them to reach the hay - this solution only stayed for a short while.
I have offered numerous simple solutions such as stuffing tubes full of hay or just putting a large dish on the floor and filling it with hay.
Today I have been in and I found very young guinea pigs not able to get at the hay and if they were twice the size they still would struggle to reach the hay rack. When I showed a staff member and explained the problem she took some of the hay out of the hay rack reluctantly may I add and put it on the floor. Immediately the guinea pigs went to eat it which says it all really. However when I asked what they were going to do about it the staff member said she couldn't do anything but she would let the manager know.
I find this despicable that it has been allowed to go on for so long and I intend to pursue this matter until something is done about it.
The times I have spoken to the staff in the store none of them appear to show any concern or be interested in the animals welfare, they just seem to have been employed to stack the shelves. I think the staff in the shop should be taken on for their love of animals and for their knowledge of animal welfare and not just as shop attendants.
I do hope you can be of some help with this matter.

The stores are a disgrace and the quicker they stop selling animals the better. They would still be able to function and make a profits of their sales aso there is no need to put animals through what they are going through. if you take a sick pet back they put it to sleep, if they need to put two of the same sex out on the floor they just put any two together, and someone i know that works in a P@H just confessed to me that if they get lovely animals for adoption they put on shop floor, if they cant sell their own "plain" looking stock they put in adoption section to tug on the heart strings. This person finally confessed to me last night that my boys were handed in for the adoption, she said the date of birth was correct, from two seperate litters and the women was keeping the females, as they looked nicer than what they had, they kept them seperated through the back for 4 weeks (just incase the woman came back in) and then put them out for sale. The place is a disgrace and something needs done. x

I just don't understand why you didn't take 2 seconds to point it out to a member of staff?

If you were that upset about them not being able to reach hay and water, why did you leave them like that? Now they are going to have to wait until head office reads your email and passes it on to the store.

There is no need to go over the top and shout at them about it - just point out nicely to a member of staff that they must have put the bottle on too high that morning, can they please go and lower it? Then things get done there and then and you go home without having to worry about it. If they don't do it straight away or ignore you, then fair enough, contact head office - but I just don't understand why you didn't point it out to the staff. I bet they will be wondering the same thing when they get an email from head office!

What you dont understand is neep neep I havent got the confidence to aproach someone in the shop. Confrontation is something in my life I'm trying to work on which is why I i promised myself I'd say something next time. Yeah now they'll have to wait now and I've already realised i let them down so theres no need to make me feel any worse!

Don't worry yourself :) I have spoken to staff several times and got poor response and it is hard to approach someone with an issue especially when they don't seem to be bothered. Hopefully head office will deal with the store managers and staff and tackle the issues :)

Ok, thanks for explaining. I just got the impression from your first post that it was because you would fly off the handle at them - not necessarily a bad thing though ;D

Thanks for understanding. But knowing me id start raising my voice or something. But yeah i supose that wouldnt be too bad. I bet those piggies would if they could speak.

I've always wanted to work at p@h but i dont think i want to anymore. It seems to me that the staff have been trained to sell, sell, sell. Rather than make sure the animals are okay and that they give the best advice to buyers that they can. Actually maybe i should so that i know that they would be looked after well on the shop floor, but reading the storys about out the back I think I'd get the sack for trying to sort it all out and not making them money.
Someone in front of me in the till que was adopting a rabbit, all the girl said was that the rabbit needed nuggets so she went and got them. Didnt mention that they could gradually change the rabbits food if they wanted. Then said hay only for 24 hours and gave them one of their "how to" leaflets while the other girl stood there doing nothing while the que was getting bigger and bigger.

I told them in the email that i want a response to know that they've acted on my complaint. ill keep emailing the same email until they do or if i go back to the store again (which is very likey) and i see something like that again ill mention it to a member of staff. O0

Which store is your local one? I really do think that each store varies, depending on who you have working there.

I started working for them because I wanted to work with animals, and I swore that I would report them to the RSPCA if I saw something amiss ;D

You definitely wouldn't get the sack for putting the animals first - I don't think i'd have lasted as long as I did if that were the case ;)

well it all depends if I'm in university(in swansea) or not. i went back to my student house to pick up a few things i forgot so i popped into the one in swansea but my local one when I'm home is in bridgend. All this is in south wales if your wondering ;D

Your so lucky you work there! Bet you keep the manager on his/her toes O0 ;)
