Up until now Ive been getting the pigs meadow and Timothy hay from Pets at home.
But was wondering if somewhere like haybox or dustfeee hay would be better quality and value.

thanks

ian

We get haybox hay every month, its very good but the timothy strands can be a bit long and sharp. We also buy PillowWad meadow hay and Science Selective timothy hay from Amazon which are softer.

I get mine from Hay and Straw and also timothy hay. Both do a good price for 9 kgs of hay at reasonable prices.

I buy wilkos meadow hay atm my pigs love it and it's only £1.50 for a kg.😊
I could get a whole bale from my local farmer but I have a horse and sometimes it can be dry and dusty or even a bit mouldy which puts me off it even though it works out well cheaper at £4.50 a bale.😩

I use dustfreehay and I can recommend their products. Just ordered some more soft hay and English Timothy today.

I get Morrisons hay which is included in their grocery delivery items. The piggies have tried lots of hay and they like this.

Do you have a farm near you that sells hay? I get mine from a farm and it is the best green organic meadow hay at a fiver for a big farm bale. My piggies love it.
How dusty is that @Betsy ? Have wondered about trying to find a local farm..

It isn't very dusty at all from the farm I get mine from. It certainly doesn't play my terrible hayfever up I know that much. I'll have to change farms when I move. I have googled it and found one not too far from my new house so will try the hay from there.

Be careful buying it from farmers, most of the year it's ok but at certain times of the year when their stock is running low it can be very dry and dusty, sometimes mouldy but that's rare..I have had a few bales like this over the years, and be aware of where the field is that the hay comes from..we have had glass, metal and plastic bottles, cans etc from fields near roads.

I have never had this problem. Put your nose on the bale and give it a good old sniff all the way along. It should smell sweet like honey and make your mouth water. If you know anyone who has horses ask them. They are very fussy about the hay they buy.

If you buy from haybox or Timothyhay, or one of the others you're usually getting better quality hay, and it works out a lot cheaper. The issue can be storage as 9 or 10 kg of hay that's not compressed takes up quite a lot of space.

We certainly are betsy lol
I was getting my hay for free from our yard but at the minute the hay is really bad...we are even buying it in from elsewhere for our horse even though we still get charged for using it on our stable bill as it's in with the rent😭😪they grow their own hay.

That's such a shame. The hay from my local farm has just been harvested, is lovely green organic stuff. Been getting it there for the last 3 years and never had a problem.

Hay is so fickle! the hay cut at work this year is not great - my haybox is a hundred times nicer! And dust extracted.

After reading people's comments here, I've taken the plunge & ordered from Haybox.
Just their meadow hay in 2.5kg size, to see what it's like :)
I usually buy Oxbow Orchard Hay & my piggies love it. They are not keen on timothy hay... They are loving Readigrass dried grass & their oat hay too (for variety)
Am looking forward to seeing the Haybox hay... Thanks everyone :)

Has anyone tried pillow wad meadow hay from Vet UK? I have seen it online and wondered how good it is.

We get pillow wad meadow hay too but from Amazon where I think it is cheaper! It is softer than the Haybox hay so better for general bedding and absorbency for sitting on as well as eating, my main herd of 6 rather like pillow wad in their hay trays but my other pair prefer the Haybox. So I buy both because my piggies are spoiled precious little :)

I give Burgess dandelion and marigold hay for eating everyday, but looking for some good pillow wad hay for general bedding. Rosie is fine with any but Abigail suffers with a stuffy nose if its a bit dusty, I will have a look on Amazon. Thank you.

Personally I think PAH hay is poor quality. I recently bought some timothy hay from Timothy Hay Supplies, 9kg for £22. Lovely green long stems -not brown short stems which smell a bit damp.

I currently get a bale from my local garden centre/nursery for £7.50 a bale but if I don't have time to get over to buy it I will order from hay and straw online and get 9kgs of ings hay for £18. It's lovely green and long strands and the piggies love it

What sort of hay is this lady kelly? Timothy tends to bit more expensive doesn’t it?

I don't use Timothy hay often as mine are outdoor pigs and they have a huge pile to dive into which Timothy hay isn't good for. The £7.50 bale is just meadow hay. I like the ings hay from hay and straw but it's a lot more expensive
