Hi all,

My two GP's have the super compressed large hay for rabbits and guinea pigs from Pets at Home, I have tried Timothy hay but they don't like it. Is this hay okay for everyday feeding or should I be using something else?

Thank you.

I used that, and I still do but when my mom picks it up if we have ran out suddenly xD It seems okay to me my pigs like it :)

I don't buy products from Pets at Home or any other pet shops that sell live mammals any more - so I can't comment on their compressed hay. I would imagine it's fine - the one to avoid giving to adult guinea pigs is alfalfa hay as this has the highest calcium content and calorie content.

However, I did once buy P@H own brand Timothy Hay and was very disappointed in it - Timothy Hay is meant to be green and theirs looked like straw. Timothy hay is fantastic for adult guinea pigs as feed ( it's got the lowest calcium content ) but is too spiky for piggies to rummage through or use as bedding. So, don't bin the Timothy - it would be worth trying them with it again sometime.

My pigs used to have compressed hay but it wasn't enough for five. So order from Hay for Pets Timonthy and Rye hay, they love the stuff and it's coarser as well so great for their teeth! Plus it's cheaper to buy in bulk then the compressed stuff

I didn't really like the quality of the P@H hay, I think it's chopped as well which means it's dustier and less beneficial for the teeth than long strands (I have a feeling that it says it's not chopped but it definitely looks it!). I actually prefer the Bob Martin hay you can get from B&M Bargains, I don't like a lot of Bob Martin products but I've found that hay to be reasonable quality and really cheap. Dust Free Hay and Hay for Pets are both online companies that supply high quality hay of different types - you can even buy samples to try.

I dont shop in there but I have seen their hay I dont think it is very good quality hay at all for the money you can get better elsewhere :-) meadow hay is just fine for guinea pigs, some people with older pigs choose to feed exclusively timothy hay due to a lower calcium content.

I have shopped there in the past and had their compressed hay, I found it was very inconsistant, the quality was poor. I now use Dust Free Hay company, and piggies and myself are very pleased.

Meadow hay is fine. It all depends on whether you are happy with the quality most importantly and the price.

My boys are very fussy so we only have Burgess Excel forage, chamomile or Dandelion and Marigold hay. They are hay snobs although I may try some other online places to see what else they fancy...

I use dust extracted natures own meadow hay as bedding which they also eat http://www.naturesownpets.co.uk the bag size is 3.5kg and is only £3.99 a bale. I buy mine from The Range.

My piggies have Timothy hay and barn dried grass to eat and any other varieties I can find.

I have used pets at home hay in the past, my piggies aren't fussy but I find pets at home hay expensive for what it is.

Thanks, I'm going to try the hay you recommended from The Range :)

If your pigs like meadow hay I recommend the morrisons hay 750gms for £1 and it usually is very green and smells yum

It is usually quite soft and green but I have a stalky bale at the mment which I can only put down to this shoddy wet weather :(

I hope you like it :)
I used to always get the range hay just watch out for thorny branches as I used to always end up with thorns stuck In my hands it is lovely and long though and very green if you route throughand pick the right bag.

Make sure you have a good examine of it in the shop and sniff it! (Yes, you have to look totally weird for your piggies sake).

I was getting this for a while but my local store started stocking bales which had been badly stored and were damp and musty and looked quite brown so check it looks green and is dry and smells sweet.
