Pets at home really don't care about their pets they are still reccommending the ferplast cavie 80 cage for adult guinea pigs in responce to our replies that it is too small!

Pets At Home Response: Hi,

Many thanks for your review,

Please see below a response from our suppliers:

Thank you for your feedback. The RSPCA offer guidelines on what is recommended for permanent accommodation. There is no legal minimum size however we suggest the ferplast cages are used as temporary or night-time accommodation only. The Cavi 80 is suitable for adult guinea pigs however we would not recommend this product for rabbits.

Kind Regards,
The Pets at Home Team

This was their reply. These people make me sick using pets to put money in their pockets they have no empathy for living breathing feeling animals.

That is shocking! How irresponsible of them! They tell you 'oh, it's only for night-time accommodation' but I guarantee that won't be passed on to their stores, and the staff will be just hear 'suitable for guinea pigs.' :(

The major problem is that their customers are not aware these are too small and sold by unqualified employees to make a quick sale at the guinea pigs expense

i would never buy from them. you're giving them money to carry on doing this type of thing. :mal:

eta: i meant people in general by the way, not you specifically :)

That is terrible. I would never buy these sort of cages from pets at home anyway, but they don't tell you that it's for only night accommodation though, do they?

I think a major problem is that a lot of stores and people think that if information come's from the RSPCA it is LAW. When it fact it's far from it! Thankfully my local Pets at home is amazing but I can see many of them being poorly educated, not just pets at home but other pet shops too!

It's so sad there should be a minimum law because that means you could keep a guinea pig in a hamster cage or aquarium, I guess there is no law because if there were pet shops would be out of business. Apparently smaller cages are the best selling items due to their low price and starter pet marketing

All the stores I have been in were happy to reccommend two boars in a cavie 80 cage. I think customers are unaware of how big guinea pigs grow. It's a sad profit making business. The worst part is that they throw a whole load of pets from different litters in the same cage and then sell them off knowing full well they could be fighting already but because most rodents sleep in the day most customers will never know it's a myth most pets in the cage are related. If they were related they would have similarities.

Oh my gosh that is just horrible! :hb: Shouldn't pet store staff even do a little bit of research? A quick google search makes all the difference.

My local pet shop, Pets Corner, is one of the good ones (not perfect) out there. I don't know if all of the Pets Corners are like that, but both of the ones I live near have pretty knowledgable staff and the pets (there's only about a maximum of 4 enclosures of pets at a time) are treated well and there is a sign that says "we do not make any profit from our pets". Also they refuse to sell single guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils etc. (any social herd animals) and will only sell them in pairs or more. The pet aquariums that the for sale pets live in should probably be a bit bigger though.

A sign in the shop says all the staff have taken an educational degree of some sort in animal care, so they are fairly competant. The staff are very friendly. The other week when I went there to buy some more hay, I heard one of the employees actually tell someone they don't recommend buying a "boredom breakers weave-a-ball" toy because it lasted their piggies (the employee actually owned a piggy) literally two days. I think that's pretty good staff, being honest and telling a customer not to buy one of their guinea pig toys!

The indoor guinea pig/rabbit cage that my pet shop sells is about 100x60 cm (or 100x80, can't remember). I guess it's not much smaller than the minimum RSPCA size, but I think it should be bigger.

For a pet shop it's pretty okay. It does anger me though how the staff recommend people house their piggies on woodshavings. And it's apparently okay for two rabbits to live in a double decker guinea pig-sized hutch (it's just under 120x60 cm, I believe). Maybe double decker isn't so bad, especially for dwarf rabbits, but rabbit hutches should be more spacious.

I can see everyone's point about P@H being to blame but I also think the customers should take some of the flak too as they should do their research before even thinking about getting a pet, and that sort of info is very readily available on the internet, forums like this, books etc. And probably a touch of good old-fashioned common sense would not go amiss either. I have got to say that my dealings with P@H have always been really good and if anything they have plugged the larger sized cages/hutches = more ££££ for them.
