I bought a christmas herb & hay treat (forage box) & lm unsure whether it's safe. Can anyone tell me if these ingredients are safe.

Cellulose fibre wood.
Peas
Graminaceous seeds
Canary seeds
Coconut
Hemp seed
Linseed
Fennel seed
Black cumin seed
I always thought piggies shouldn't eat nuts & seeds.

Starch
Vegetable starch 9.1%
Peppermint 0.6%
Chamomile 0.6%
Spinullina hay 9.9%
Wheat herb 3.0%
Crude fibres 18.8%
Crude oils & fats 4.6%
Crude Ash 6.9%

If there is anything here that would harm piggies, it goes back with a letter to head office. Anything above the black cumin seed doesn't give a percentage.

Has anyone got any idea on this, what about you piggy owner you normally no what's good for the piggies & what's not. Hate to give them something that will make them sick.

There is a fair bit of starch and fat in there. Typical shop gimmick.

However, it won't do yours harm as long as you feed the contents in small amounts as a special treat over a space of time. It is better than the junk they used to have, but if you want to give treats, please keep to herbal forage and readigrass. Christmas and other holidays are a human institution; offering treat boxes is geared for the human purse and not because pets need them.

Your piggies will enjoy breaking into a cardboard box with mixed hay and herbal forage much more if you want to make them a present! That will keep them occupied for a goodly while... ;)

If you want to make special treats yourself, we have got a collection thread here...

I bought the woodlands one once

- and must admit , I didn't get my money's worth out of it at they sat in it and wee'd in it before all the forage had been eaten .

I'm glad Wiebke has answered that the one you have bought won't do any harm I small doses .

Perhaps a hay tray with some forage added to the hay would be better value in future ....

For my piggies I bought some of those plastic tree ornaments that you can open, and I plan to fill them with a special forage mix.
It seems nicer to hang their gifts on the tree than to just give them a bag of forage.
Plus it means I can choose what goes into each bauble, and can add some of our homemade dried bits too.

Here is a link to similar baubles from the UK (I just bought mine in the local craft store):

I bought a Forage box from Wilco just to see what it was like and tbh it was a waste of money! First of all my piggies loved it and I thought great! But then I realised that it was just a bit of died off turf with a few dried flowers on the top in a box like a carrot cottage! Now they just sit on it and wee and poop on it. The died off turf will be going in my compost bin tomorrow and I'll see what the piggies think of the box. That will probably have the same fate! I'd rather spend my money on something else. A lesson learnt there!
