One of my guinea pigs is a very fussy eater... he will eat lettuce, red pepper SOMETIMES, cucumbers, carrots, hay, pellets(of course) and that is about it

I have vitamin C pills that one of my pigs will take without a problem ,but the other one REFUSES. I was wondering what is a good way to get down enough vitamin C to a guinea pig that is a very fussy eater. He eats romaine lettuce and a little red pepper, but I assume this is not enough. And of course the pellets as well. So what is a good food to give a fussy eater to ensure he is getting enough vitamin C?

And how many carrots do they get per day? Just one right? WHat is the ideal MEAL for a guinea pig in the morning and then in the night

What should I be giving in the morning... and then in the night?

Thanks in advance

:) A guinea pigs natural diet is grass and herbagage (dry grass at that!) So they should be gettiung lots of hay (good hay, though not necessarily expensive ;) ), Dried grass such as ReadiGrass/Just Grass/Graze On or Excel do one I think.

Fresh grass is loved by guineas as is Dandelion, Plantain and herbage.

Veg that I feed mine are Spring Greens,
Kale (occasionaly
Baby Corn (little and occasionaly)
Standard Corn on the Cob
Carrots, they're supposed to have no more than a third of a carrot a day- sometimes mine have more sometimes less and sometimes they don't have carrot.
Celery, leaves are a favourite here :)
Peppers (all colours)
Lettuce- Cos and Romaine, as well as the Baby Leaf varieties that you can get, feed this as a treat as it has little or no food value :)
Cucumber- a great treat for guineas
Sunflower Greens
Dill and Coriander and Parsley
Fennel
Chicory

Fruit:
I tend not feed fruit much.
Apples (occasionaly
Tomatoes
Satsumas (if they're cheap LOL) but some of mine won't go near Satsumas
Bananas are a big favourite with mine (the insides)

... not all in one day even a wheek!

I don't bother with Vit C unless they're ill, its all in their diet :)

Mine have fresh food in the morning and still have hay in their racks from the previous night. Readigrass in the afternoon, fresh eearly eveningish and hay (lots of) to take them through the night. Dried food is refilled when necessary. Sometimes they get more Readigrass at night with their hay too, depends what they've eaten really.

Thank you :)
-Is the corn uncooked? So I can buy it and give it to them straight away?
-When you say carrot, do you mean big carrot? I give them babycarrots, just one per day.
-How much nutritional value does romaine lettuce have?

Also...
-What do you do to clean the guineas' bowls and bottles?

Thank you :)

Piggies like old or baby varieties, but the young carrots have more flavour. They like the carrot tops as well.

All varieties of lettuce should be given as a treat only because they have no nutritional value and they all contain laudenam.Iceburg lettuce should not be fed at all because of the high level of nitrate it contains.

Yes,corn, and all veggies, should be given raw as cooking removes some of the vitimins and in any case they need to chew the hard veg to help keep the teeth worn down. The leaves of the corn and the silk is very much liked as well.Baby corn can also be given

To clean my piggy bowls I use running hot water, but 2 or 3 times a wheek I soak them in a bowl of hot soapy water.,I then rinse thoroughly under hot running water.

:) All the big carrots are new at the moment and very tasty :) Sometimes mine have the Chantenay (spelling!) carrots which they love too.

Bowls get washed with washing up liquid and bottles with Milton, or similar, sterilising tablets.

my max is fussy piggie aswell he allways eats his hay and he dry food his favaite at the monment is celery

Karen, do you know if you have to limit banana? I noticed on the sticky topic shopping list it says in brackets that banana should be fed in great moderation as can cause constipation? Have you ever had an pigs that have had problems after eating it? My pig Max likes banana, but I was a bit worried about giving much.

Yes, it should be restricted simply because its a fruit :) mine only get banana once in a while and only one (maybe two) chunks each. Mine have never had any problems when eating it but then as I said they don't get it often and never a lot.
I give it to guineas with diarrhoea to replace lost Potassium but not all of them like it ::)

Ok, thanks for the advice Karen :) I've only been giving it to Max once a week and only a chunk out of a banana if i'm eating one. The other three won't eat it!
