Hi I was just wondering if going grey is something that happens to older pigs? I have a pig Ollie who's at least five years old (might be seven) so getting on a bit now. He's been gradually losing weight over last few months which I've put down to age (he's his usual self and eating fine) Suddenly he seems to have gone grey around his back end where he's usually black. I bathed him less than a fortnight ago so it's since then. Seems to have happened very suddenl. Is this normal for older pigs?

Some guinea pigs change colour, darken or fade as they get older (one of my red dutch abys is now dun instead of ginger), but they don't go grey like dogs or humans. I grew up with a buff piggy who lived until nearly 10 years old. He didn't change colour at all and certainly didn't go grey!

I am sorry that your boy is losing condition. He has most likely had quite a bit of loose hair washed out during the bath, so any fading hairs in his dark coat have become more obvious. Have you had him checked over by your vet, in case his weight loss is down to something more treatable like arthritis?

gizmo started to go grey around the mouth as he hit 4 years and marmite has a grey mouth (hes 2 1/2)
