I've been trying to vary my pigs diets but I really don't know what to give them! I get paranoid about giving them too much of certain foods.

I was wondering what people typically feed their guinea pigs each day/week?

At the moment, the pigs mainly eat: carrots, brocalli, parsley, sweetcorn, strawberries, cucumber, apples and grapes.

Freddie isn't too keen on the sweetcorn, and the girls are a little too keen on the sweet stuff like grapes and strawberries. Mum keeps feeding them sweet stuff, and they've rather got used to it! (Question: can guinea pigs get hyper on sugar? I've noticed Elphie is very hyper and jumpy lately)

Also, how much do you feed your pigs of each thing?

It looks rather like too much sweet stuff! Fruit should be given only every second or third day. Too much sweetcorn is not good either.

Try to introduce herbs like coriander, basil, dill.
You can also feed celery, lettuce (stay off iceberg), introduce other cabbages like sweetheart or Savoy, cauliflower leaves, carrots and cherry tomatoes (those not daily), French beans and other green beans. Peppers of any colour are high in vitamin C and a slice per piggy every day takes care of their vitamin C intake.

There is a list of what they can eat in "shopping list" at the top of the food section.

my boar loves Chicory and sweetheart cabbage. I also give them watermelon but only the skin and a little bit of the pink flesh as if you had eaten a bit of melon and the stuff you would throw. They also like basil, and any herbs. pears and one likes banana but in small amounts of course.

my lot love parsley... can't get enough of the stuff.. so thats a good one :)) mine arent keen on any cabbage as much... only spring greens really.. and even that they only sometimes eat it.. they seem to be eating less now the weather is getting warmer though.

Salads they love.. basil, lettuce, rocket, watercress, peppers..

Thanks for all the help!

And don't worry - they don't eat the sweet stuff everyday :) They have baby sweetcorn every few days if we've got a pack, but they mainly eat greens. Cucumber they have when its hot, and grapes and strawberries I try to limit as treats - keep telling mum that she is treating them a little too much. I'm not keen on giving them apples, but mum does every now an then.

Their diet didn't feel very varied - seems to me that they just eat brocalli, parsley, carrots and grass most of the time. Cheers for the tips on what your piggies like to eat, I'll try those out :))
