I have a query to any of you who have had abbys who suffered with cateracts (or any pigs for that matter)
The boys always used to have one hidey bed holes each in the cage. Recently Chunky seemed to be monopolising both beds and whenever I went in I found Taz sitting outside on straw looking rather miserable. I thought at first that he maybe wanted to be closer to Chunky so I set up the log cabin with the log arch over the window hole (which was where Taz had been sitting) but that didnt seem to work - Chunky just sat under the arch instead :-\
I then wondered if, as Taz's testes have now dropped, it was a boar thing and Chunky had over sprayed all both the homes with his own scent? (he IS the stinkier of the two - although Taz has always been more dominant) So I cleaned and disinfected everything - with lemon juice & vinegar - gave them both a bath and cleaned up grease spots etc. No difference.
I have now tried putting the two log cabins in but with one without a roof on - and the roof stretching between the two. Taz seems to prefer the bit in the middle! (see Pic)
Problem I have is that cos he has longer hair & is sitting on straw rather than the vet bed, its getting matted a lot more. I'm also finding he seems to occasionally have strange patches on his back of hair that is stuck together - although it brushes out easy, isnt greasy and I dont think it comes from Chunky ( :o I'm not 100% certain)
As it is getting colder at nights now - even though they are indoor pigs, I would still prefer them to be warm and cosy and I want Taz to stop looking so miserable when he's sitting there :'(
The only thing I can think of is that its because of his failing sight that he doesnt like to be in the dark anymore....(he also doesnt hide himself in my hair like he used to - preferring to face the lightest direction) Has anyone else had this experience with cateracts in pigs and if so what did you end up doing for a bed?
