I have a query to any of you who have had abbys who suffered with cateracts (or any pigs for that matter)

The boys always used to have one hidey bed holes each in the cage. Recently Chunky seemed to be monopolising both beds and whenever I went in I found Taz sitting outside on straw looking rather miserable. I thought at first that he maybe wanted to be closer to Chunky so I set up the log cabin with the log arch over the window hole (which was where Taz had been sitting) but that didnt seem to work - Chunky just sat under the arch instead :-\

I then wondered if, as Taz's testes have now dropped, it was a boar thing and Chunky had over sprayed all both the homes with his own scent? (he IS the stinkier of the two - although Taz has always been more dominant) So I cleaned and disinfected everything - with lemon juice & vinegar - gave them both a bath and cleaned up grease spots etc. No difference.

I have now tried putting the two log cabins in but with one without a roof on - and the roof stretching between the two. Taz seems to prefer the bit in the middle! (see Pic)

Problem I have is that cos he has longer hair & is sitting on straw rather than the vet bed, its getting matted a lot more. I'm also finding he seems to occasionally have strange patches on his back of hair that is stuck together - although it brushes out easy, isnt greasy and I dont think it comes from Chunky ( :o I'm not 100% certain)

As it is getting colder at nights now - even though they are indoor pigs, I would still prefer them to be warm and cosy and I want Taz to stop looking so miserable when he's sitting there :'(

The only thing I can think of is that its because of his failing sight that he doesnt like to be in the dark anymore....(he also doesnt hide himself in my hair like he used to - preferring to face the lightest direction) Has anyone else had this experience with cateracts in pigs and if so what did you end up doing for a bed?

Thanks - Denny

I've had pigs with cateracts and they seemed to not like anything changed like if i moved an igloo , and when I had a similar set up to your like the 2 cabins either end mine with cateracts always preferred the middle no idea why but you saying it has just made realise one of my boys doing just that a while ago, he was often in the same spot so I moved food and water next to him it was as if he did'nt like to walk far from his spot, maybe it was the cateract,

we had a baby born last friday with a weird eye,i dont know if its a cataract or what but he seems to be managing ok with it
he was the runt of the litter and the eye is cleaned out with warmwater and a cotton wool bud every day so it doesnt stick together, its sort of a film over the eye and wont shift.
i guess ill wait and see if it clears up

a lot of eye problems heal up really well and often look so bad and nasty they heal with no ongoing problems normally a scratch from hay etc, if after a few days any eye problems that dont heal obviously go to the vets normally they will give you eye cream or drops for an infection

If you are needing to clean it with water to stop it sticking together it would be best to take him to your vet and have it checked out. He may need antibiotics if he has an infection, It's best to have eye problems checked sooner rather than later.
Hope he is okay,

Michelle... well there seems to be a consistency with mine there then. Yet strangely enough Taz will happily run all round the floor when I put them out AND he will sit in an Igloo or hutch then... just not when he's in the cage :-\

Lucinda - Vedra at CCT who confirmed Taz's diagnosis, says thats whilst surgery is successful in the short term - they can come back... its also terribly expensive - I seem to remember she mentioned a 4 figure number per pig at the moment :o. She was saying that the equipment needed to do the op costs around £30,000 and that she's been on at her local vet practices to try to get them to club together to get one between them - so far with no success. They don't cause the pigs any problems so she says unless you were showing then you wouldnt need to get anything done really... then again IMHO most who breed for show wouldnt bother getting it done anyway - just drop that pig and start again with another :'(

Looks like Chunky is getting one in his right eye now so I may have probs with both of them eventually :(

sars.. I dont think that pigs can be born with cateracts... its something that happens over time - as with humans but here is a close up for you of Taz' and his cateracts so you can see if your pig is the same... as you can see the film is not over the eye, but is in what whold be the black part of the pupil. There is no discharge or crustiness to they eye and it doesnt weep. Hope that helps anyone else with the same problem as I would hope your piggie has been sorted by a vet now.
