Hi! I’ve only had my 2 piggies less than a week, they’re girls and only 5 months old.

After their initial settling in period I noticed one had intermittent soft poop, I ordered benebac and limited veg for a couple of days. They’re on the same hay and pellets as they were on at the rescue.

Last night she seemed back to normal but this morning she had developed Diarrhea. I gave her 1 dose of benebac and have been observing her eating and drinking normally until late this afternoon. She’s gone very quiet and off her food.

I have an appointment to see the vet in the morning but would love some advice on how to keep her going through the night.

Sorry for the long post!

Hi!

Please always take any guinea pig whose digestive system not doing well off any fresh food until things have normalised again.

Step in with syringe feeding and watering top up as soon as a piggy is off its food; if it is not eating at all you feed little but often every 2 hours during the day and once or twice during the night, as much as it will take (it may be a battle). you are aiming for a minimum of 40 ml, ideally 60-90 ml in 24 hours. You can mush up pellets and mix in your benebac there.

Please read the link below carefully. It contains all the practical tips on what you can do in an emergency with what you have got at hand or easily available: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

In the case of runny diarrhea and not just soft poops, get some dioralyte to help to keep your piggy hydrated. Follow the recommendations on the packet.

All the best!
