We are contemplating getting a static caravan and I was wondering if anyone on here has one and takes their piggies. If so, how do you organise it? What accommodation do they have? We have 2 pairs and usually when we go away our lovely pet-sitter comes to see to them twice a day, but if we had to check her availability every time we wanted to go we wouldn't be able to be as spontaneous...and it could end up costing us a fortune! The journey would be 2.5 - 3 hours, depending on traffic. Even if you don't have experience of static caravan life with piggies your thoughts as to how it could be made to work would still be most welcome. Our dog would also be coming with us.

We have taken our rainbow piggies away on holiday/short breaks in static caravans. Your biggest problem (caravan) is keeping them cool in hot weather but otherwise it’s absolutely fine. caravans do tend to get very hot in the height of summer, even with windows open. We kept ours in one of the small bedrooms and left a top window open and the curtains shut to block out any sun, they were ok

Never had pigs in a static caravan but I've been in a few when I was a kid. If there's a spare bedroom I agree with @Bill & Ted, that's the best place to put them. Depending on the weather, keeping the curtains or blinds closed as well as the windows open would be best, they won't mind the room being darker. It'll bother them less than heat and sunlight would. I have migraines, it's something I do anyway.

Aside from that, what sort of cage would you be putting them in? Statics aren't known for "removeable" beds as such so you'd probably end up with at least one cage on a bed, which isn't as easy with a C&C type cage. You'd probably be wanting a Ferplast or similar with a solid base.

We have never taken our Guinea pigs to a static caravan for a holiday. I think my concern would be the heat in the summer.

However, our Guinea pigs do come on holiday with us sometimes. We have spare CC grids we take to make up their home, on the floor.
Our boys are on fleece bedding and we find that piggy stuff takes up quite a bit of room in the car. (We have a small car!)
We also take the boys with us when we visit my parents which can be approx a 5hr drive. We have never had any problems, and our Guinea pigs travel well. When we stop for toilet breaks/picnic etc we offer cucumber to help keep them hydrated. They have plenty of hay in the carrier to snack on too.

I agree. A room of their own so you dog can’t get to them. A large cage on a bed would be absolutely fine. The problem will be car space I think. If you had a large cage on the back seat and a dog in the boot then there’s not a lot of space for your cases. Pets do take over lol

Thank you everyone. Yes, summer heat would be my biggest concern. I was thinking of looking into the feasibility of air conditioning. Car space wouldn't be an issue as we'd set up to have everything they needed (including cages) down there, so they would just travel down in their carriers. Definitely food for thought.
