Our girls have a hutch on legs for night time/ awful weather and a run on the grass for when it's nice enough to graze.
They have a shelter in the run but i tend not to put them out if it's raining heavily. The shelter has no floor and i tend to put a little bit of hay down but i was wondering when people think it's safe to put their piggies on the grass when there has been a frost?
Obviously i wait until the forst has gone but this morning the grass is still quite wet. Should i keep them in the hutch until the grass is dry? They seem to enjoy being in the run, all come out of the shelter to graze on the grass, wet or not.

I don't put my guinea pigs on wet grass just because they will get wet of course, but also it maybe cold! But your piggies could be little tuffys! I'll put my 3 out later when I clean out their hutch,it's in the shed! O0

The ground does not dry out enough now to put guineas on grass ;) try putting the run onto a patio but only put them out for a short time :)

Ooh the grounds freezing here we cant even do that
And I'm reluctant to take them into their pen because of temperature fluctuations
So no excersice until it gets warmer :(

Thanks all.
The grass was dry at lunchtime so i put them out then. We have a couple more days of nice weather forecast here but then they will be stuck in their hutch i think :(

Our garden is south facing so it gets nice and warm when its sunny. Today i waited while about 1 until the grass was dry before i put the girls out in the run, they have had a great time on the patio/grass 1/2 on each. They have a little house that OH built for them that goes in their run so if they fancy a snooze they can pop in. They have spend alot of time running through their tunnels and munching grass. :smitten: :smitten:

The piggy shed is nearly finished when it is they will be able to get out into the shed to run around in the day at the moment they are in the garage with a run attahed so they get plenty of exercise. It is nice for them to get outside as they love the grass, but they wont be able to do that for much longer with the weather getting colder. :(

Can't you set up a playpen inside for them? Mine have a playpen inside and they love it.

Actually, are your piggies living outside? If so, that wouldn't be suitable because of temperature changes :-\

Aww lucky you your getting a shed!

I hand pick wet grass in the morning for my girlies

RE wet grass Because my piggies had nibbled the grass almost to the bare earth even though they get LOTS of veggies Icovered the geass with 2 inches of aubiose this gives them aclean surface in their large run and the grass is growing through though I dont expect it to grow much at this time of year ,thought anyone else might like to try it,can always rake the aubiose off if needed. It just extends the time they can run in and out of their shed.,and saves them having to be indoors all the time.

as Britain is going through crazy weather patterns at the moment what we have done is move them to the garage as mornings and nights are frosty and not suitable for them to be in the garden. The garage has a tumble drier which is used so it warms the place up and we have a light on so they arent in darkness.
However, we find that about 12pm onwards the sun is out and its quiet pleasant. We put their run out and try and put it across some of the patio slabs so they arent on the grass all the time. They have a massive playhouse which sits in the run which is full of hay if they wish to retreat to it for a pignap.
Today for example we put them out and they were popcorning like mental. The sun had pratically dried the grass and they got some excerise.
Dont think the weather is going to hold much longer though so we will excerise them in the conservatory
