Some of you may remember me complaining about how my piggles would lie on the expensive Burgess herbage and then eat the cheap hay I'd got them for bedding in the hayloft mallethead ......

( although to be fair to the boys it's usually Yoshi and Moonpig who do this the most, not Wallace and Rocket)

...Well, I gave up in the end and just ordered a big bale of green mountain meadow hay figuring it was somewhere inbetween and we'd all be happy rolleyes

the big bale ran out today so I had to use the crappy shop hay I have on standby for hay emergencies while the new bale wings it's way to us. And of course they start munching it like it's going out of fashion! mallethead

Anyway, ( hang in there..there is a point to all of this and I'm getting there! 8:) ) I also got them a bag of herbage so they've got some decent quality hay as well as the cheap crap but how to get them to eat it? Just as I was opening the bag they all started the "feed me" wheek, which they never usually do for hay as it's on tap but I wasn't about to feed them as it wasn't veggie time so I just put some herbage on their plates instead ( downstairs where they eat, not in the hayloft ) and guess what? They devoured the herbage! They've done it twice today and were really excited - "ooooh Mummy wheeeee've got more treats! Wheeeeee!"

So it seems that even with piggles, presentation is everything! :(|)

And many thanks to all of you who managed to stay with me to the end of this! ;) rolleyes 8:)

And so if you've got a particular hay you've got your piggies for an expensive treat and the ungrateful little fur balls don't want it - choose a nice dish or plate to present it on and add lots of "oohs" and " aahhhs" as you present it to them and ta dah! They scoff the lot! :laluot_01:

That made me lol :))

I've been giving mine some Dandelion & Marigold Excell Herbage, at first they weren't bothered, but last thing before bed when they always seem to wake up as I'm ready to doze off, they start wheeking so I give them a handful to shut them up lol rolleyes Not sure if you are supposed to give it every day but they seem to love it now as they know piggie slave will not give in to them rolleyes

It's fine for them to have daily if you want to give it to them, I always give them plenty of meadow hay too. I gave up giving them herbage daily with the meadow hay though when I realised all they were doing with the herbage was sitting on it! mallethead

Oh yes they get loads of hay too...hay on tap in fact lol rolleyes They always ask for veggies, especially the baby she is a terror, she has the loudest wheek I've ever heard but I won't give in lol :))

Haha, my boys get hay in their tunnels as bedding and in their hay rack and then on top of the hay in the hay rack I put the excel stuff.

They always eat the hay from the tunnels then reach up on their back legs to eat the excel stuff from the top of the hay rack rolleyes

I got a free sample of the hurbage, ours arent that fussed my it, they eat the furry bits and leave the rest, its really bitty so doesn't work in the hayloft so thy have to eat it out of a bowl.

yep, it seems serving it in a bowl is de rigueur for fussy piggles. ;)

Lol, greedy piggies, always keen to get more treats. So busy scoffing it down, they didn't slow down munching long enough to realise it was "just" hay.

Don't cha just love the guinea pig way. :))
