Hello everyone,
This is the first time I am posting here, so well i am from India, I have 2 piggies both are around 4-5 months old , 450 and 480 grams in weight approximately.... the issue is, all of a sudden then decreased their squeaking and eventually they dont squeak anymore, its been 5 days, they dont get excited when i bring them any food or rattle a plastic bag. They have been scratching themselves a bit more than normal but there is no hair loss and there is no sign of ticks or lice under the hair. They are sleeping a lot more than normal and they look very dull nowadays. I don't know what's happening and there are no competent vets around here, they don't know anything about guinea pigs and they just straight up prescribe poisonous medicines(ex- Amoxicillin) in the name of antibiotics, they dont even touch the pets or check for illness, they just hear the problem and randomly recommend medicines.... currently i am just feeding them digyton, liv52 and vitamin supplement. Last thing, they are grooming themselves too many times in a day.

EXTREMELY SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST, I AM COMPLETELY BLANK AND EXTREMELY TENSED, ITS BEEN DAYS SINCE I SLEPT PEACEFULLY, PLEASE HELP ME OUT

I’m afraid it’s not possible for us to diagnose what is wrong with your piggies. We are not vets and cannot see your piggies.

You say they are eating - what is the diet you give them?
Are they gaining weight?

Excessive scratching can be caused by mites which are not visible to the human eye.

All you can do is step in with emergency care if they need it and try to find a vet - I know that’s not necessarily easy.

:agr:
So sorry that you are having such an anxious time.
I hope you can find a vet who is able to help you, but I know it’s hard in India.
All I can offer is support.

Welcome to the forum

Hey, thanks a ton for reply

Okay so regarding what I feed them,

I searched a lot but wasn't able to find hay here, neither did i find any vendors for the same, so i had to resort to bermuda grass which is a very commonly found thing, but later i somehow purchased timothy hay but my guinea pigs never even touch that nor eat any bit or it, so i continue with the grass, i feed them a mixture of veggies twice a day and constant supply of above-mentioned grass, they are 3 and half months old, one male one female and their weight are 420 and 480 gm respectively

Are your piggies living in the same cage?
If so, is the male neutered (I’m guessing not)?

If the male is not neutered, please separate them immediately. They cannot remain in the same cage.
The female will have to go onto pregnancy watch and you need to prepare for the babies to be born. A pregnancy lasts 10 weeks

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry you are worried about your piggies. I hope you can find a vet, but I understand how tricky this might be. I hope your female is not pregnant. How long have you had them? Were they living together before you got them?

I have had them for 2 and half months now and according to the pet shop owner they lived together even before that, but sorry for asking this but does the symptoms sound like she's pregnant? Because i have observed previously both of them rumble-strut a lot and the female keep spraying her urine all around

Have you checked their sexes yourself?
If they are opposite sex then please separate them immediately. An opposite sex unneutered pair should not be in the same cage. It is considered breeding to allow them to be together and breeding is not something we discuss.

Urine spraying is her telling him to leave her alone.

These symptoms of being dull sounds concerning for their general health anyway whether she has already fallen pregnant or not.
Do you weigh them weekly?
Have you switched to daily weight checks now you are concerned?

Even if she hasn’t fallen pregnant yet, then allowing them to remain together risks that she probably will. Please separate them for her safety.
Sows come into season again within hours of giving birth and if the male is in the cage then she will immediately get pregnant again which is very tough in a sow.

Definitely check to see if they are definitely a boy and girl. You can post clear photos here and the sexing experts will help you.
