Hi, I am sort of new to this site and new to owning guinea pigs. One of my guinea pigs who is really sweet was acting sort of off and not wanting to move her back paw. When I looked I noticed she had this hangnail lookin' thing. It was rather long and the skin around it was agitated so I think that it was probably catching on things. Is there anything I can do to prevent these or get rid of them myself? I don't want to hurt her so I've already made plans to have a more professional person remove it as painlessly as possible, but for the future, is there anything I can do to prevent these or is there something I can buy that will get rid of them? Please help this completely clueless noob

I have just googled around for you and from what I can gather, this can happen from time to time and there isn't anything you can do to prevent it. Just make sure you keep your guinea pigs nails nice and short.

you can remove them yourself if they are aggravating the foot but be careful not to cut in to the pad of the foot and the quick. A small amount of hand lotion should help to soften the nail.

If the foot seems infected at all where the nail has been rubbing against it, you may need to see a vet :)
