Not talking about when they get scratched, but when they scratch you.

I was holding one of the babies yesterday and she did this little kamikaze move and flew out of my grasp but she dug her claws all over my arm and (luckily!) I caught her before she fell at all, but she left some pretty nasty and painful scratches on my forearm.

Do they tend to get infected easily? I know some animals you have to be super cautious when humans get scratched. I've rinsed it with antibacterial soap, but it still hurts, worse than cat scratches. Wasn't sure if I needed to take extra precautions.

As far as I'm aware there's no extra reason to be cautious. I've been scratched hundreds of times by my Alfie (he's very nervous about being picked up) and they've all been fine :)

........ but I always make sure my Tetanus shots are up to date (they only need renewing every 10 years). The one time I was bitten by a piggie (and it wasn't his fault, he was VERY stressed) it did get infected, and although the bite was on my hand it tracked red right up my arm. A bit scary, but a course of antibiotics fixed it.

A little while ago I started a thread about being attacked by my new 5 year old boar, Brillo, who had never previously been handled. He panicked whilst I was holding him and disappeared down my top. I got numerous scratches and bites on my neck, chest and arms but they all healed without any problems.
The good news is Brillo has made great progress since then and there are far fewer scratches these days!
So I don't think you need be unduly concerned about infection etc.

Nerys and Nia had razor sharp baby claws when I got them, and by very careful handling, I managed to escape a lot of damage, but by no means all.

I have a little dab-on disinfectant handy and use bepanthen to help the healing process. But frankly, scratches from my roses are nastier and go infected far more often!

I've had worse looking scratches from the cats (and many scars to prove it) but these just hurt more. I think I'll throw some rubbing alcohol on it later, to be safe.

I'm currently getting big scratches on a daily Basis and all have healed fine so not much need to worry i dont think,i do have quite a few large scars from piggies lol x

always getting scatched on chest where i put them had no probs also get bit i just leave them but i surpose i should put cream on you never know with bites

They look better today for sure and don't hurt as much, so they're healing well. ;)

At least she scratched the top of my arm and not the bottom like my cat has before. I have a scar on my wrist that makes me look like a cutter. rolleyes :))

Tobii and Rocket are terrors when it comes to handling. I think Tobii is worse now than Rocket, as we have been focusing on handling Rocket more than Tobii.. But yes, I always have about a dozen scratches on each arm :))

Deannna xx

P.S. No, I don't do anything to heal them, and have never been infected. Don't worry really..

Thanks.

They're healing up well, probably will add another 4 scars to the collection! :)) :p

I try and make sure iam wearing a jumper because my piggies like to run in my hair so i allways get scratched when iam holding them but mostly when i try to put them back in the cage they go wild so i make sure i have two hands holding then firm but to tight! around there bellys away from there claws so i sont get scatched and also to make sure they dont jump, and yeah they sting soo much but i havent been infected yet lol xxashxx

Beckyp, Sam (Nenharma39) and I often compare our wrist scars actually - it certainly comes with the territory when we get some of our rescues in.

It does look like self-harm sometimes and I have had to explain in the past when I see someone notice any scars I may have.

i must be lucky i only ever get red marks that last a few weeks but theres allways new one just as the onld ones are healing that are nice and raised ( being sarcastic) a new craze with my two i think is digging there claws in my arm when there sitting with me so they end up looking like big red bloches . xashx

Mine sometimes get excited when I am returning them to the cage and they end up scratching me with their back legs. I just put antiseptic cream on and no problems so far. Just remember they do tend to walk on their wee / poo area so can't be very clean getting a scratch from them so if skin broken antiseptic is a good ideas!

I was wearing a strappy top today and picked up 2 of the 4 baby sows I have in for foster and one decided to nicely claw me and gave me a 2" scratch which bled on bet you can guess where :0

my chest is covered in scratchs but then I live where I cannot be overlooked and my flat tends to float around 25 degrees most of the time, so I often just wonder around in undies except when people are here....
