Hello everyone.

I went out to do my piggies tonight and absolutely heartbroken do find one of our pigs laying dead on her hay. :'(

I just wondered if anyone had any idea what could have caused it? I assume heart attack. I had 13 pigs and I've had 2 pass away before her, but they were both elderly pigs and died of old age.

She was as far as we can see, healthy and fit. She was only a 3yo and was eating drinking pooping and breathing fine. She was fine when we left her yesterday.

I'm so sad to find her like this, mainly it's a shock I think. We do have a poorly pig who sadly has cancer but all our other pigs are happy healthy and all are well taken care of.

Not sure how relevant it is, and sorry for the gory details. But she did have a little bit of orange discharge from her vagina as we picked her up to take a look at her. Not sure if that's normal with her passing away or if it may be a symptom of what caused it?

Any comments would be appreciated!

Thanks. :'(

So sorry for your loss :( Each animal has a special place in our hearts.
I hope you're able to find out the cause, it's not nice not knowing.

Hi! I am very sorry for your loss!

It is always a great shock to find a piggy dead without any previous warning and there is generally a need to make sense of what has happened. Unfortunately, heart attacks, acute hear failure, strokes or even a fright can kill at any age right out of the blue.
It is not unusual to find blood or other excretions from orifices when a person or guinea pig is dying/has just died. It happens when the body is closing/breaking down.

You are welcome to post a tribute to your girl in our Rainbow Bridge section if or whenever it feel right for you; each of us grieves differently.

Thank you. It was horrible. :'(

Yeah I knew it was quite normal tbf, I just wondered it may have been any kind of symptoms, I suppose I just wanted to know what it was that caused her death really. :(

Unfortunately, only a pretty expensive post-mortem at the vets can give you the full answer you crave as to what exactly she died from. We can only guess as much as you. :(
It is very normal for he onset of the grieving process that any loving pet owner has these feelings of failure and guilt when one of their piggies dies. With an unexpected death, you can't help by asking yourself whether you have missed something vital or whether it was something you caused, but you can take my reassurance that you have not missed anything or done anything wrong. These things really happen out of nowhere!

I lost my old lady Tanni through an overnight heart attack last week, so I fully share your feelings! I did find her pitched forward with a mouth full of hay, so in her case I could make an educated guess, as it must have happened very suddenly and unexpectedly.

Oh no. That's horrible. I'm sorry for your loss too! : (

I'm so sorry for your sudden loss. I have had a few unexplained deaths in my time and they are the hardest. *hugs*

Thanks for your comments everyone.

As if we haven't had enough sadness. One of our little piggies with Lymphoma went downhill tonight and we had to have her put to sleep. We're heartbroken.

Hopefully things will get better from now. :'(

BIG HUGS

I am so sorry! What a horrible time for you! Lymphoma is such a nasty thing to get. :(

It is tough to lose more than one piggy so quickly after the other when you haven't really had time to digest the first death yet. Please take your time to grieve and try not to feel like the worst piggy mum in the world; you haven't failed any of your piggies. I know from my own experience that it can really whack you when you have multiple deaths.

Thank you. It is, poor piggy. She had a couple of happy months longer than we thought.
I don't, but it's hard like you say, 2 in 2 todays is even more heartbreaking.

Thanks for the lovely comments!
