one of my boars is very unwell. Getting him to vets today asap. But how do I encourage hime to eat?

Poor little boy has got Gastro-enteritis. Bless him. Got it early so should make a full recovery.-c

Not the best way to begin a new year, with a poorly piggie, I'm sorry he is unwell!

What are his specific symptoms, and what treatment is he on? Gastroenteritis isn't a nice illness, fingers crossed he makes a swift recovery.

I am sorry - not a nice diagnosis! I hope that he can recover well!

Make sure that he gets plenty of fluids when you syringe him food!

To encourage eating - try small amounts of favourite foods, try to give them during cuddles if the food will be taken away by another piggie before the one who is unwell gets a good chance at deciding to eat it, take away any unwanted food and try again with fresh later as an unhappy tummy can need time to settle between attempts to eat, try giving recovery type food made up as a warm soup in a shallow dish in front of their nose as the vegetable smell will stimulate appetite (not hot!), avoid strong herbs even though some of these say they stimulate appetite as new strong herbs can upset unhappy tummys, try cutting into broccolli stem or tearing apart grasses or lettuce - ie strong vegetable smells next to the cage a few minutes before attempting to feed a small portion as the desire to eat can take time to emerge in an upset tummy.

Finally - keep a careful eye on fluid intake as piggies can lose out on fluids by not eating as much wet vegetables as usual. Avoid natural diuretics like cucumber skin as these will encourage the piggie's body to lose water.

Best of luck, Sarah

0.5ml of Metatone daily for 5 days may help stimulate his appetite.

Been giving him fluids very regularly. Vet seems confident he will make a good recovery. Been encouraging piggy to eat vegetable soup too. However, his favourite food is cucumber, but will cut the rinds off.

He also seems to have a dental problem, which is going to be sorted Monday. Vet didn't want to stress him too much because the piggy had bit his tongue.

I am just lucky that the vet is a guinea pig fan too. he has quite a few piggies himself.

So you are in the best of hands then! A piggy savvy vet is worth his weight in gold!

Sending my vibes to your poorly boy.

The grass has worked a treat. x Thanks xxxxx
