Hi,

I'm a new member, I joined yesterday and I have lots of questions I want to ask before I get my piggies!

I have a large bedroom and plan to keep my pigs in my bedroom with me but I'm worried about the noise and smell?

Does anyone else keep pigs in their room? And if so how do you find it?

Thanks x

Hi!

I live in a studio flat and so my piggies and me all sleep in the same room and I have 7 boys! As long as you keep them clean and always have a window open a little bit for ventilation you should be fine - we are! You may get woken by the odd water bottle in the middle of the night or the odd piggy dreamer - enjoy!

Good luck!
Sue

hi i have 2 boys in my room, they need cleaning out every 1/2 days as they do smell but I'm in a box room lol

the noise you will get used to, i love my piggies in my room as they are sooooo friendly because they see me much more than my girlies who live outside, my girls see me on a daily basis but obv i watch tv in my room etc and my pigs are very outgoing and confident as nothing phases them, you get used to their noise and they get used to yours..my duke even sleeps with the hoover on! lol

My indoor piggies live in my 9 year old daughters bedroom, which is next to mine. I clean them every other day so the smell is fine, although there is some smell, but mostly hay and food :)
They do make a fair bit of noise, but its not constant by any means. Mostly in the evening when they know they're going to get their veg, or when they hear me opening the fridge downstairs ;D

I have 7 piggies in my bedroom, and I love it! It's easier to get them out for a cuddle. Mine often sit on my bed and watch TV with me.

They don't smell bad. I clean mine out every other day, and change any wet bits every day. Sometimes they are noisy, but they tend to go quiet when I turn the light off. You get used to the noise anyway. I actually wake up worrying if my room has gone silent! I sleep better WITH the noise now.

Mine make a lot of noise but only when i feed them or they want something, and its not a loud or annoying noise, just a small little noise :smitten: they dont smell either if you use the right bedding and clean them out enough :)

Phew, I feel so much better now!

Do they not gnaw the metal bars though? Or is that just when they are hungry/want exercise?

x

Mine never gnaw the bars, not even when their hungry. They just say WHEEEEEEEK! when they want attention!

What's the best bedding to have in an indoor cage? Do they tend to kick out whatever they have anyway?

x

Woodshavings are a bit of a nightmare, because they kick them out everywhere, and you have to vacuum every five minutes. I recommend vetbed or fleece. Put a layer of newspaper underneath it. Change the newspaper every day (just roll it up and bin it) and wash the fleece/vetbed every few days. Shake the hay off it first though, and wash it in an old pillow case with a knot in the top. It stops your washing machine getting clogged up with hay, and stops all your clothes coming out covered in fur and hay! I picked that tip up from somebody on here.

You can get vetbed and fleece online, or on ebay. What sort of cage are you planning on having?

I agree, vetbed or profleece are the best to go for if the pigs are in your room. I've tried shavings, hay, megazorb and vetbed and all were too messy apart from the vetbed x

Sooooo true! ;D I actually cover mine over at night too with throws to let them know its bedtime and it gets them in a routine too.

I've only just started looking but I was thinkin of the Nero 4 cage?

What sort of daily cleaning activities will I need to be doing?

x

I don't know how big the nero 4 is, but I would go for at least 4 feet by 2 feet. They will need daily exercise as well, but as long as you have no exposed wires, or places they can get stuck, you can let them run around your room but you should always supervise them.

sawdust is the most awful thing for inside..having said that mine are on towels and polyester and flick poop out when they are running around ;D

with mine i have polyester on top so i brush that off daily and everything gets washed ever 2 days or so.

Megazorb is similar for flicking everywhere. Mine run round and kick it all over eachother ::) funny though ;D

Hiya, I live in a studio too. My pigs are opposite my sleeping nook - we can see each other in bed! As everyone else has said, if you clean them every few days then they never smell. We have a routine that involves turning everything off and good night cuddles so they now go to sleep when I do. They tend to have a hour on, hour off so they do get up in the night. I hear them sometimes, esp. at sunrise in the summer, I find it very comforting.
The only time I've ever seen them chew the bars is when I've put toys on the floor before letting them out. It was time to play and Boogie was not waiting one second longer!

You can use fleece blankets, it's all the same thing. I got fed up with fleece in the end because of the endless washing of many, many layers and also because it was difficult to keep it in place when Boogie was convinced that she could have more fun under it rolling in wee. Charming. I think vetbed is a much better option for indoor pigs. Sweep it, hoover it, stick the whole thing in the washing machine and then tumble drier - job done in 1.5 hours. ('cept I have to go to a launderatte, but you get the idea). Also, hay doesn't stick to vetbed like it does to fleece.

Hope that's helped. :)

hi could you just use like nornal fleece pet blankets?

Yep you can, i bought loads from the £ shop but don't use fabric softener, it acts as a barrier & the pee sits on top :)

I use vetbed and change and wash it every couple of days, and there's no smell.

I've got 1 piggie in a Nero 4, it's almost 4ft by 2ft. just shy by a few inches.

I'm confused. If you have Vetbed or fleece in the cage do you still have wood shavings/megazorb and hay? Has anyone got any pics to show what it looks like?

No you dont have magazorb or anything, just the vetbed. You still give them hay ina rack or something though to eat i have a pic of a fleece which is similar to vetbed? x

I can't wait for my vet bed to arrive!

I think vet bed will be better, because fluid passes through it and the top stays dry, so your piggies will never be sitting in a wet wee patch. I use fleece at the moment, and it gets really wet, even with newpaper underneath.

Ahh I see.... that cage is well good! So you put newspaper underneath and then change them both every couple of days?

x

Yep, i change mine every three days, you can do a spot clean with a hand held hoover and a brush everyday to get a bit of the poo out lol. the cage is made from grids from screfix, you get 18 grids for £19, if you have the space its well worth the money because you'd be spending more on a nero 4 and it would be smaller, mine love their C&C cage :) by the way, are you anywhere near devon? there are rescue bebies there and they are gorgeous, they're in the rescue section on here x

Guina pigs in your room is a nice thing to have but thats not what i have. I mean cleaning them out and moving poo from one side of the house to the other. My sister wouldnt put up with the noise or the smell. Juts not for me my parents and sister wouldnt let me anyway. O0 O0

Mine aren't in my room either, they have their own room :) but moving poo isnt a problem, i just put everything in a bin bag then put it in the bin xx
