NocturnalRapport

We recently rescued a one year old male guinea pig. Unfortunately, he has always lived in a hutch on his own :(

We thought it might not be so bad if he continued to live on his own but got out in the garden during the day with the other Guinea Pigs. For obvious reasons, we couldn't let him play with the girls so we tried introducing him to the boys ... big mistake!

Our "boss" boar attacked him, the others hid behind the boss and poor Pigsy was backed into a corner and then attacked :...

We took him out straight away but are now wondering what to do for the best. We don't want him to live on his own.

Would it be best to ...

Have him neautered and adopt a girl playmate for him or buy him a boy playmate and have one/both neautered?

I think the best choice would be to get him neutered and with a sow, because if you get a baby boar, you lead the risk of them not getting along. then you would have two single boars.:( i don't know, lets hear what other people have to say:)

Thanks for your reply :)

Do you know if Pigsy will still try to mount other pigs if he was neautured? He's tried it on with the boys, the girls and even the rabbits!

Neutering only interfers with his ability to have babies, not with his hormones. You will still get the humping and everything with neutered boars!

I would recommend as well to have him neutered by an experienced vet and have him with a girl (or more). Cross gender pairings are usually very stable as the dominance issue doesn't rear its ugly head.

I am having a neutered boar with a steadily climbing number of girls and would not ever want to be without one!

AWW Poor guy. I think the above advice is great advice. Hope he finds a friend soon...

You could try your local rescue first before putting him through the op. They should be able to determine if he can successfully be matched with any of the boys that they may have available. If this doesn't work then I would go for neutering and get him a harem.
