I'm so worried about my little guy, Ping Lee. He is 2 1/2 years old and hates being held. Because of that I held him infrequently and just like to sit and watch him play with his ladies. He lives with Lulu May and Walnut. He's neutered.

Today was the big cage clean out and I decided it had been too long since I've checked their bodies to see how their health is. I felt absolutely sick when I saw Ping has a large lump down in his privates. It looks like he has a huge ball but he is fixed so he actually doesnt have any. And the swelling has caused his penis to go to the side, over quite far.

I called his Vets and the earliest is Sunday they can see him. He is on their cancellation list though.

The lump is about an inch and a half in diameter. I feel horrible that I didnt notice until today :(

The other strange thing is his right eye. He has brown eyes and over the last few months there is a blue ring around his eye, like he is getting a cataract but his pupil is still black in the middle. I've been concerned but not overly as he is eating, drinking, popcorning, his usual self.

Does anyone have any idea what this lump could be?

So worried!

Thanks.

How long ago was he castrated? He could have a post op abscess. But it is hard to say without a vet checking up on him. How do you mean on the cancellation list? We dont have things like that over here? I suggest getting him to a vet as soon as you can to start some treatment or work out what it is.

I hope he feels better soon. :(

x.

Hi Abi_nurse,

He was neutered a long time ago. Over a year and a half ago. Oh he is on a cancellation list, so if someone cancels their appt before Sunday then they will move him into that appointment. If no one cancels then he will see the Vet Sunday morning.

I took another look at the lump and it's not as swollen as I thought. It definitley needs to be looked into but I think I was in shock when I saw it. I felt around it and Ping wasn't bothered at all. Perhaps, its' a fatty tumour? I had a couple pigs in the past with those. I hope it is something simple like that but I will find out sunday at the latest.

Thanks for your post :)

Had a look through your old threads, Ping has been neutered a while, right? That would make it unlikely to be a post op abscess. Does it move with the skin or is it attached to the tissue underneath? If it moves could just be a big cyst, these are usually slow growing and are usually noticed when they are small but this is not always the case. Is it attached to his nipple? Boys can get mammary tumours like girls can, if it is attached to the nipple then that's what it might be. Does he have any broken skin or scabs in that area that could have become infected?

I am not an expert on this kind of thing but having found several different lumps on my piggies I have done quite a bit of research. This site has helped me but some pages appear to be down at the min. http://www.guinealynx.info/lumps.html

Like you i would be worried about my pig as all we can do here is guess, educated guesses perhaps but I would get him to a vet ASAP. Is there another vet in your area even if it is not your usual one? Lumps are similar in many animals and even a dog specialist vet may at least be able to give you an idea of what is wrong. In my opinion any vet is better than no vet but if you aren't happy with their competence consult a vet you do trust before deciding anything.

I hope it's not to blunt what I have written because I don't want to worry or panic you but you probably are anyway. I freaked out about one of my girls last week and she turned out to be fine. I hope he is fine too, fingers and paws crossed for him and for you not to be too worried.

Just want to offer some loves and hugs for you XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

It may be an abcess from a hay poke. Tufty has recently had a simmilar lump that was probably caused by a hay poke. Sometimes sharp hay can poke through the skin and a little bit is left inside to cause an abcess. This sort of thing can be drained and cleaned by a vet and a course of antibiotics is given to clear up the infection.

Sending huge vibes!

Abscesses and some lumps can swell up very quickly, so you have most likely noticed it fairly quickly anyway and need not feel guilty! I hope that he can be seen today. Best of luck!

if he does have a lump near his private bits and he's neutered, it is possible it's a hernia. this is quite a rare complication but i have a chinchilla who has the same thing. he was neutered over a year ago and the lump only appeared recently. the vet did a fair amount of poking and she could push it back in so decided it was a hernia, even though you'd expect them to appear sooner.

the danger with hernias is that things can get trapped inside and the blood supply can be cut off but because of where it is (my vet thinks it is very unlikely anything other than fat would go through), anaesthesia and open surgery risk in small furies we decided to leave it alone and just monitor him. he's perfectly fine otherwise and the vet advised that he would go downhill very quickly if it got worse so it would be fairly obvious and then it would need intervention.

I'm sorry I haven't replied back until now but there was nothing to say as he hadn't gone to the vets until today.

So there are a few problems with Ping Lee. One is regarding his right eye and I've been worried about it for quite awhile but I didn't think it was a huge deal until 3 days ago. The eye seems to be bulging from the socket and it started off a few months ago with a few white spots around the edges of the eye. Then there was a white ring around it. I was confused because it didn't look like a cataract and it didn't seem to be causing any issues.

Time passed and now the eye is bulging out and weeping. It is completely blue and he cannot close his eye fully due to the size of it. This all happened suddenly. The Vet checked the eye pressure which was fine. But when she checked for ulcers he does have an eye ulcer, most likely caused from it drying out. So he is on an eye ointment now for 2 weeks. The eye will also need to be lubricated 3 x a day for the rest of his life as she doens't believe the eye will fully recover. He is completely blind in it.

Then the tumor/mass near his privates. He is able to poop and pee normally but it has pushed his privates over to the opposite side. She was able to take 3 samples and they have been sent off to the lab. It's definitley not a cyst or abcess.

She also believes there may be a tumour behind his right eye and he also is tilting his head from possible neurological problem.

But she seems to feel he has cancer. We have to wait though to see what the biopsy says. I thought guinea pig's didn't really get cancer very often?

Oh and the eye thing.... the white in it is from the eye turning into bone. It's this werid thing that can happen to guinea pigs. I found a link on Guinealynx that shows what it looked like before it changed even more.

Here it is:

Poor Ping. :(

He is the little white piggy in my avatar. That was when he was 6 weeks old I think.

Sending lots of love to Ping, and hoping that everything goes well for you :)
At least you know what it is and have that comfort of knowledge. Best of luck to your little sweetheart x

Yes we know what the eye is but we don't know what the mass/tumour he has near his rectum is. :( I hope it's not cancer. The Vet seems to think it is. She is also worried he has a tumour behind his eye. :(

oh love...........
whee really hoped for better news for you and Pingy :(

He is only on an ointment antibiotic for his eye. And saline eye drops.

Yes pets are such a worry when they are ill. I wish he could tell me how he is feeling. Poor little piggie.

I am really worried about him and I rang the Vets but they don`t have anyone to see him. So frustrating. I`m going to drop him off tomorrow a.m. so he can see someone faster than his original appt at 5:45pm.

He has less energy now and just kinda sits there. Every once in awhile he jerks like his eye hurts him. Its all red behind it now like it`s bleeding. I gave him some metacam I had leftover from my rabbit. I know hes in pain and I just want to make him comfortable until I can get him in tomorrow. :( I also have some stronger meds from my rabbit, a type of morphine, just incase he goes into stasis I kept this for my rabbit. I dont want to use the stronger meds just now. I hope I won`t have to.

I hate this and I hate the Vets for not having anyone to see him even though it`s not their fault.

Oh no love :...

Whee will have all paws and fingers crossed for darling Pingy XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
HUGE HUGS for you too i know how worried you are XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Try keeping him hydrated and offering him some little bits of food often. Grate or cut up into strips or even make up a puree of his fav veggies or fruits.
