Hi I'm new, just joined today. I'm so glad I found this site because I am in need of some desperate advice. One of my 2 female guinea pigs died this morning from flystrike (she was short-haired, surprisingly) and both I and my other guinea pig miss her lots. Obviously I do not know yet how she will react or come to terms with the loss - will she be affected in any way by this later? They were sisters and very close, and you never saw one without the other. They were about 3 years old. I don't know yet if she will go off her food or anything, but I've done a bit of research and I know that some g-ps pine without a companion if they have grown up with one. Should I keep an eye on her over the next couple of days to see if she behaves normally? I'm a bit reluctant to take one from a refuge as I have heard they can have some difficult cases there - my remaining guinea pig is docile and shy while the ill one was the more dominant leader. Has anyone any good ideas on how to help my guinea pig? Many thanks.

Unless she actually pines, I dont think theres any reason to get another. But if she does, you could get a neutured boar from a rescue center-they'd get on perfectly. I'm very sorry that you lost your pet, and I cant imagine how horrible it would be to lose a pet to flysrike, and I hope that you never experience flysrtike again.
I'm sure that she wont pine, as you sound like a good owner and I bet that your piggy is spoiled rotten with hugs and attention-so she shouldnt get lonely. :)

aww sorry about your loss shell be popcorning in piggie heaven 0:)

my boy lost his mate but he s fine - if she stop s eating and is hunched up in her cage/hutch then i would get her a friend

I'm so sorry to hear about your piggie, what an awful way to lose her.

I'm sure her sister would love another friend, even loads of care and love from humans is little substitute for a friend of her own kind :)

If you you decide you need to get another piggie, please consider a rescue piggie - most reputable rescues will have been vet checked and quarantined before being able to be re-homed, whilst you only have to search these forums (not too hard I must add!) to see the amount of people who have bought from petshops and had many, many problems. Rescues will let you take your guinea in to let her choose her own friend, and most rescues are full of guineas desperately needing a great home like yours :) You may find this post helpful: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=12320.0

There are several people on this forum who run rescues, so they may be able to give loads of great info :)

And welcome to the forum :)
