just wondering if its normal for my guinea pig to be drinking roughly just over half his water bottle in about 12 hours.ive noticed this since I changed him to pellets rather than musely. and been giving him timothy hay rather than meadow to eat, plus my flat is not warm so I don't think its a temperature thing,he does smell more than my other pig, but my other pig has had his balls chopped( cant spell neurtured? ) maybe the smell is infected pee?

Drinking amounts can vary hugely even with the same piggy, but if you are worried, it would be always good to check with a vet. Increased drinking can be a symptom of various issues.

How big is your bottle? You definitely need to see a vet if your boy is drinking 300ml or more in 24 hours.

just measured it, I fill it everyday 300ml , hes drinking about 2 /3 of that , I fill it 4pm everyday and I notice at 5am its 2/3 finished, so am I right hes drinking 200ml per 13 hours

Thats does sound a lot to be honest, is it out of character? Does he normally drink that much. Have you checked for a leaky spout on bottle also? Well worth a vets check if he continues drinking that amount - increased drinking can be several things most commonly a UTI, is there any squeaking when weeing or pooing?

I have heard him do a random yelp twice before, a few weeks ago.seemed to be when he was in the corner of the cage so maybe he was peeing, the bottle is new, its not leaking ive just checked.he feels a bit boney compared to my other pig but I'm not sure hes underweight or not.hes not sick looking though, he just got through a u.r.i too, hes eating normally, carrots , cucumber , celery , tomato's, timothy hay. when i handle him hes so noisey , not yelping but like squeaking non stop, ive only noticed him drinking that much for a week or 2, can a uti kill him?

Poor boy, but it sounds rather like another vet trip... :(

I think popping him into see your vet is a good idea, could be a number of things and better to be safe then sorry especially as getting over a URI. Its a good idea to weigh them weekly gives you a better indication if anything is wrong.

hmmm, my vet is crap kind of, they said the uri was an allergy, and I ended up paying 2 visits,1st eyedrops, 2nd baytril which done the truck, luckily no consultation because hes registered with a school still ; ) I mite visit the guinea cat and rabbit vet near me, apparently its one of the best around England, so is a uti not as bad as a uri then, is it life freatening

The one in Northampton? If so Simon and Kim there are regard as two of the best guinea pig vets around. Your piggie would be in expert hands :)

If it is a UTI it will need antibiotics to sort it out.

Could be a Uti which is just an infection of bladder so not life threatening but uncomfortable for the piggy. Might just be cystitis in which case they will give you a course of treat.

Go to the Cat&Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. I am using them myself for my piggies. Both Kim and Simon are very good.

Depending on what is the issue, drinking too much can have a long term impact on their health if you get into nasties like diabetes and kidney problems. Any infection is much easier to treat the sooner you start. :(
