Anyone used this for their pig and did it have any effect? Jaffa keeps getting recurring bouts of a very snuffly nose. We've been back to Simon Maddock numerous times but really are at a loss as to what's causing his breathing difficulties (which disappear as fast as they came). He's had both Septrin and Zithromax, which clear up the breathing issues. Likewise, he's had no antibiotics and the breathing STILL clears up so we don't really know whether the antibiotics did anything or not. He has bisolvon to dry up any mucus and metacam to reduce any inflamation in his upper airways (it's all in his nasal passages, no further down).

Today I discussed the possibility of allergies with Simon. We're both clutching at straws really. So I asked whether I could try an antihistamine and Simon agreed it was worth a shot. Vedra at Cambridge Cavy Trust suggests 0.2ml 2x daily and that's what I'm going to give him next time his breathing is snotty and laboured.

Just wondered if anyone else had used antihistamines on their piggy.

I have used it at that dose and it has helped when a few of mine have been a bit snuffly from their hay.

Thank you - that's helpful. I've been trying to work out if it's linked to certain types of hay. I change their litter trays every day but that's just the cheap pre-bagged hay from The Range or Jollyes. They have either farm baled hay or Oxbow timothy in their hay rack. It could be inhaled dust from the hay though as Simon says their nasal passages are tiny and it only takes a miniscule particle to make them snuffly.

I've a hunch it's linked to humidity and temperature as he always seems to be worse when it's warm and stuffy and I've had them out in the garden for several hours in their run (they live indoors). Maybe any humidity allows the hay to release spores which affect him (just thinking aloud really).

It could well be. Humidity also has an effect on heart pigs.

I've got 2 of mine that have had the occasional nasal noise, I had to stop giving them veggies in a bowl because they would inhale the water then toot which was scary! Since scattering their veg it rarely happens apart from the odd occasion when one of them decides to snick their noses too far into the hay & inhale a bit of hay dust (Even though I shake it out their are always one or two tiny bits that get through) It doesn't happen often & I haven't used Piriton but I do use something similar that Vedra at the CCT told me about & it works every time to clear it :)
