Plane travel for guinea pigs

I am reading and hearing mixed information in regards to plane travel and guinea pigs. :-\

I am moving states and wish to take my guinea pig with me, the flight is 3 1/2 hours long, will he survive a plane flight or am I better off rehoming him?

If he will cope with a flight, any suggestions on making him comfortable

If I have placed this in the wrong section, I apologise and hope the mods will move it
 
The 3 1/2 hour flight won't bother the piggy at all so long as it has food and water. They must however, be transported in special crates which meet the stringent requirements of the airlines. Then there is the issue of whether they have to be quarantined when they arrive in the states. One thing is for sure, it won't be cheap to take your pig to the states. There are people here who have brought pigs from Denmark and Finland which aren't that far away and it cost a few hundred pounds to bring them here.

when I moved from Germany to the UK, I contacted several airlines asking how I should be best transporting my piggy, what carrier it has to be in etc.

I was just told that they are not allowed on airplanes :-\ like, AT ALL.

maybe because they are rodents, and if they escape could damage cables etc in the plane?

so as far as I know, you wont be able to take them via plane.

I had to have my parents bring them to the UK by car, with the ferry.

He/She isnt moving INTO the states, just moving states (he/she is in the USA already).
so I dont think quarantine would apply in this case.
 
Oh sorry, I misread it lol, I thought it said moving TO the states lol. I don't know the rules regarding pigs on planes in the states but they can travel by air to and from the UK.

hm, can you name me some airlines that actually allow piggies, out of interest?

Its just that it was such hassle to have my parents come with the ferry to transport them, if I was to move back or if I was to take some rescues from Germany in, it would be quite handy to know which airlines actually transport piggies.

Because as I said, the ones I contacted all said NO. :(

I don't know which specific airlines allow them but can try and find out. There is a longhair breeder here who exports cavies all over the world by air tho I don't know which airline she uses.

My friend is going to be taking her 5 cats to the States in a few years and possibly some guineas....I'm sure she has found a company to arrange the transport.

My other friend has just renewed her visa to work in Australia and is going to take her 2 cats over - this is being arranged by a company in Dorset at a cost of £1700! and will mean 30 days quarantine once they arrive in Oz.

It sounds a very complex process? but ive taken piggies on long train rides here - when i got some rescue ones in Devon on holiday and i got them all the way back to Birmingham no problems in a pet carrier - was a funny story as the catering manager on the virgin train heard about them and said over the tannoy for the lady with guinea pigs to come to the buffet to collect some apple for her guinea pigs ;D

I hope you manage to take your guinea with you - the animal staff at airports are pretty good.

Ah that's so sweet!

I've seen some of those Airport programmes which feature the staff in charge of the animals and they are really dedicated. Some of the animals are crammed into crates too small etc and they always make sure they're OK and fit to travel. But I wonder if that's the case in all countries.
 
Animal Airport? I've seen that show a couple of times but never saw any guineas pig on it :-\

I hope you can find an Airline to take your piggies. Sorry I'm not much help.

yeah Ive seen it on Airport and Airline sometimes how they re-crate them etc,theyre really good at looking after the animals
