Soooo my guinea pig lost 10 grams he is 7 months old about and now he put it back on in a week (he lost it in a week) so thats not really the problem I'm pretty sure hes eating well hes breathing is fine and yadda yadda yadda, but theres a little crustiness or i dunnno if its crusty i havent like touched it but like some markish thing like in the corner of his eye..on yahoo answers they said it was respitory infection but hes eating fine and breathing fine, could he just have a dry eye or something any ideas? Just to ease my worrying

I'm pretty sure they secrete something out of there eyes that normal? I'll have a look and see what I can find

Eye cleaning fluid: Guinea pigs do not blink and often sleep with their eyes open. They have a white milky fluid to clean the eyes. If you notice a guinea pig with watery eyes, please check for irritation like a speck of dust or hay in the eye and if necessary, wash out the eye with some boiled, cooled water. If the runny eyes continue, you need to see a vet.
Please see a vet as soon as you notice crusty eyes or noses; they are symptoms of respiratory tract infections which can kill if not treated immediately.

sorry, not being very helpful am I?

Thank you for the help his nose is not crusty its just like this bit of stuff its just * know how guinea pigs eyes always aroudn the sides look like watery (like all eyes) just a bit of extract or something

The crusty eyes can be perfectly normal. Some piggies get 'sleep' in their eyes, just like we do if they've not wiped them properly. If it continues and the eye starts to look irritated, take him to the vet, but for now that's not something I'd be worried about if he is fine in himself and his breathing/eating/pooping is all good.

A 10g drop is nothing to worry about - it's the difference between a big wee/poo and not, so 10g is perfectly fine. 30g+ a week and then I'd worry. Week to week weighing isn't that accurate because as I said, your piggy could just have had a wee before you weighed him.

URIs usually present with runny nose (usually the first sign), heavy/laboured breathing, overly crusty eyes, piggy hunched up in a corner and going off food.

So, your piggy sounds okay to me, so don't worry! :)

Your piggy sounds OK. Slight crusts can happen occasionally; that is nothing to worry about.

Here s a good guide for when to get worried about weight loss. The daily fluctuation in weight can be as much as 30g - the difference between a full tunny and bladder and an empty one!

It is very easy at first to be worried since you are still establishing what is "normal", so you then know what is not. Better to ask too often than too little! Weight gain is slowing down between 6-9 months old (how soon depends on much your piggy has grown before), but your boy won't be fully grown until about 15 months old.

Is he alone or has he got a friend?

Thank you for all your help I'm a relatively new gpig owner and are anxious about them so much they arent even that tame they run like hell when i try to touch them I'm so worried i cant get them out can anyont help with that?-c-c
