I have just got back from the vets with diego, he wanted to put him down but could give no reason for it except for he is so dehydrated that he thinks there must be an underlying health problem. He could find nothing wrong with him having given him a check over. His eyes are starting to sink as he is so dehydrated.

He is not eating or drinking and not running around in his cage or on the floor, whereas he is usually very lively and squeeky.

On Thursday I got back from work and found diego in the corner of his cage and some food left in the cage which is unusual, although his cage mate has put some extra weight on this week so I think Diego hasn't been eating all week. Anyway Diego felt lighter on thursday, he ate some vegetables I hand fed him and lapped some water out of a spoon, he did the same friday night. Saturday he refused the vegetables but was still taking the water.

I have mushed some of his food down which he had quite a few spoons of that last night and this morning and some water, at lunchtime today he wouldn't have water or pureed food which is why I took him to the vet.

What can I do for him to bring him back round. He is my first guinea pig so I'm not experienced with them.

On Thursday he had poo inside his bottom which wouldn't come out so I eased it out and bathed it but his bottom is very smelly. I did this again on friday and saturday but this morning there was just one piece of poo, at lunchtime today there was a bit more as he'd had the puree. I have managed to get a few more spoons of water in him this afternoon, all I can do is keep trying today.

The vet wants to see him back when they open in the morning at 8.30 which is difficult for me as I have a new job and can't be late as the ratios in the nursery will be out, and I am only on a temporary contract for 3 months having been out of work for 6months I cannot afford to lose this job. My friend who has had pigs for many years has said she will look after him in the day for me.

I'm sorry I have no time to reply fully. It's very important that he gets food into his system - 120mls if syringe feeding. This link should help. If you give your location hopefully there might be a more piggy savvy vet that can recommended if you feel you need one.

Just realised I'd not put a time frame on the feeding - it's 120mls over a 24 hr period.

I live in sleaford lincolnshire, he is refusing all food and water from a spoon and syringe, he isn't chewing on the syringe and is now laid on his side like he's waiting to die

sorry to hear about your piggie:(

Is there anyway he will take anything from the syringe, even some water? I found wrapping my guinea up in a towel and gently giving fluids a the corner of his mouth a small drop at a time.

I don't know what else to suggest, the vet should have given him fluids they can give them under the skin. Only a vet can give the right advice sorryx

So sorry to hear about Diego. He does sounds very poorly indeed.

If he is at all able to take any water or mushed up piggy food (via syringe) then please keep trying with that, even if you have to swaddle him in a towel as lily suggested. If he's simply trying to resist the syringe but can still actually swallow properly then please keep syringe-feeding (but be sure to check that he's swallowing each mouthful before giving the next). You could try giving him some human rehydration powder (eg Dioralyte) if you have it - just dilute as for humans.

It's a very sad situation and I've been there myself so I really feel for you. Unfortunately in order to stand any chance Diego desperately needs to take in food/water to keep his digestive system moving but I know it's not always easy to make that happen.

I really hope that things are not as bad as you fear x

Thank you all for your help, he passed away a short while ago and we have buried him, I kept trying with the syringe but he would not swallow, I held him all afternoon and as he died so he wasn't alone.

Oh I'm so sorry - that's so very sad. Unfortunately when piggies can no longer swallow the prognosis is very bleak so I'm sure you tried everything you could.

I'm glad that at least you were with him at the end. Diego was clearly well loved. So sorry for your loss x

:( really sorry to hear this. He was with you so that would have given him some comfort at least. Big hugs x

Oh no poor Diego that's such sad news:(. I know this might sound silly but if it's any comfort to you he'll be at rainbow bridge running about like mad with all our other dearly departed little piggies.

Hugs from me,

Jenny xx

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. You clearly loved him. You did the best you could and he was with you at the end which is what would have been a comfort to him.
Run free over the bridge little one

Hugs Sarah xx

I am so sorry for your loss!

Sometimes there is simply nothing you can do when the body is shutting down, even with the best of vet care; you have done what you could for him. Diego has been able to cross the Rainbow Bridge carried by your love - that is a very precious last gift you have given him.

so sorry to hear this:( you tried everything you couldx

RIP little onexx>>

I am so sorry.

When you have healed please get the guin savvy vet and then take time before contacting one of the rescues.

Remember to disinfect his hutch, throw out bedding, straw etc

sun dry the hutch for a few days.
