Lately I've felt a little lost on my guinea pigs diet. I am afraid of urinary issues, and I just want a clean slate on what to feed. If you guys could help me come up with a new diet for them that would be awesome! I have 2 guinea pigs, one is 3 years old and the other is about 5 months. Thank you!

Hello,

My Finn and Lara get romaine lettuce everyday. Together with romaine lettuce, celery, cilantro, parsley, carrot, dandelion, or other veggies are given. Mine get fruits as treats. They get about a cup to a cup and a half of veggies daily.
Mine get Oxbow hay without interruption and I give them small amount of Oxbow pellets every day.

I give lots and lots of grass because it seems to prevent the urine becoming concentrated and becoming sludgy . I give 3 non leafy veg and 3 leafy veg."Today I gave carrot, capsicum and cucumber as well as dandelion, coriander and lettuce. As well as unlimited hay.

It is difficult if they don't like something, what I do with one of my pigs is just give the veg she doesn't like first thing before she has eaten any other veg for the day. and I keep giving it day after day, just that one thing in the morning, I don't let her smell any other veg otherwise she will wait until I give those. This has worked for me and she has increased her list of foods she eats although my other pig will eat anything so she is a good example which may also help.

Do they not like all colours of bell peppers? Coriander (cilantro) is another good source of vitamin c. Mine get a lettuce leaf in the morning. Then afternoon they get pellets and a selection of what I have to hand - green bean, spring of coriander, pepper, cucumber, celery. I’ll occasionally do a mix to feed once. This includes a few slices of carrot. I don’t really give it to them much though - perhaps twice a month. Sometimes I will buy them a salad mix.

Hello,

All of my girls get a high vitamin C low calcium diet. I make sure that hay is available at all times, but veg wise I try and stick to a majority green-based diet, They get bell pepper, romain hearts, coriander, and cucumber daily. If they were to have a treat it would either be a piece of carrot, organic pea flakes or some parsley. They also get pellets in the morning (1 tablespoon per pig, 2 tablespoons for the babies as they are under 4 months). Also, instead of using tap water, I bought a water filter to try and minimize the amount of calcium as I live in a hard water area. That is mainly it for their diet. I would not recommend buying any treats from a pet shop as they can contain substances that are not good for them.
