Hi all,
My male guinea has had a cyst that burst quite some time ago (2 months). I cleaned it for about a week/10 days and all went well.
But it has not yet heeled over completely, the hole where it was is still there, it is covered in a like crusty looking crumbs don't know how else to describe it. It is not sore or infected it,s very dry and clean. Will this small hole eventually close or will it stay like this?
He is very well in himself and acting very normal.
Many Thanks
Carol C

It depends if any infection has healed or not. Has he had any sort of antibiotics? Was it definitely a cyst rather than perhaps an abscess?

DITTO i agree daftscotslass. Are you still cleaning with warm diluted salty water? We had to do this for months with Duke after his abscess ops.
Go to the vets and they will reassure you or give you more antibiotics.

Good luck to your little man :-* :-*

with the crusty top sounds more like a cyst to me but its alwasy wise to get it checked I can tell the difference but thats years of keeping them that gives me the experince,
with cysts the easiest way to deal with them is if they are "ripe" meaning if they are already leaking a little get a clean cloth hibiscrub if poss and scissors I cut the fur round it, the pus is so thick and sticky ugh, its hard to remove it from their fur, then gently moving round the lump exert some pressure with the cloth/tissue the grey pus will come out like a worm, get as much as you can out with out causing distress, then clean it out if you can see a hole get a syringe and diluted hibiscrub or boiled cooled salt water and syringe water into the hole cleaning it out fully,
keep it clean , now you should be making the crusty bits soft with twice daily cleaning so it will heal and dry up, eventually, if any doubt get it checked out

Yes, It was a cyst. Took him to the vets before it had burst and had it comfirmed.
I think I will start again by cleaning it and see how that works. There is no stuff in it and hasn't been for a long time. Will be keeping a close eye on him.
Thanks everyone

Have no experience with cysts but plenty with abscesses! Scarby's went on for a couple of months.

Thanks, Michelle.

i think Scarby may have a cyst. Hard like a pea, doesn't do anything or upset him.

cysts seem to be the same size as a pea abcesses are often larger and more mobile

It's important to note that cysts can and do grow much larger than pea size. I've had a couple of rescues with huge ones that have needed to be removed surgically, both with good results. one boar had a cyst the size of half a golf ball. A sow that came to me had a huge cyst that had become infected and had begun to break open....not nice.

If in doubt, it's always best to see your vet for correct diagnosis and treatment if needed...should be obvious :)

A cyst that refuses to heal may be best removed by the vet. Cysts, like abscesses can encapsulate and then there is little chance of them resolving satisfactorily :-\
Just my thoughts and experience :)
