Best of luck with your afternoon trip!

If you have spoken to a nurse or a receptionist, they will not be allowed to give you any results over the phone. Only a vet is allowed to.

Yes they will! Ive cleaned their cage out and refillied the hay loft with their fave hays. :)

I'm actually going to eat something now for dinner as I didnt feel like eating earlier on.

It is very strange sitting here and not looking at them munching away as they do! :)

NO STONES!:(|)

But they did find two other things.

1. He has a little bit of arthritis in his back legs.

2. His diaphragm bones arent connected as there is a small break in them, which he said was either a deformity that he was born with OR he was stood on!

I told him that he was from a rescue and that the rescue said he came from appalling conditions and was neglected, so he seems to think that he was stood on and as it wasnt treated it just healed by itself and thats why he sometimes has breathing difficulties. So he strongly recommended that he NEVER has a full GA as he wouldnt be able to cope, only do a GA if its a life or death situation.:...

I said he was fine in himself and has always had occasions where he has the snuffles since ive had him, so he said aslong as he isnt put under any stress which he never is, then he will be fine. :(|)

Also all of the staff commented on how lovely they were and thought that it was VERY funny that they liked to sleep in their cosy's.:) They said as soon as they put them in they were both in them snuggled up, I said well they are VERY spoilt. :p

The vet has given me metacam to try as he said it will help with the arthritis which could be the reason why he squeaks when weeing and of course it will help heal the bladder if its a infection.

Its the dog suspension so he said one drop twice a day for a week and then give it when needed.
But i am going back next Tuesday to let him know how he gets on and if he has stopped squeaking then I'm to use the metacam when he does. He said that he isnt going to give antibiotics as he wants to see if the metacam works first and then if he does still squeak after a week he will give more antibiotics, as he said as he isnt doing it all the time it could just be the arthritis or the bladder is a little inflamed.

The vet suggested that i put the drop onto a biscuit that he will eat i do give them woodland oat treat i think they are called he said this would be fine, but i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what else i could put it on, as it needs to absorb into something.

I am so relieved for you that it isn't a stone.

It very much looks like the x ray was well worth having done as at least now you know about his problems. Poor Gizmo being stood on and not receiving treatment :( That must have been very painful for him. Still, at least he is happy and well and thank goodness he has found a loving forever home with you.

When Connie was on metecam, I had to give it her via the syringe. If he eats the treat you give him with it on, I would just carry on using that treat as you do not want to make it taste nasty for him.

I always gave Connie a little treat afterwards such as a slice of melon or cucumber as a reward for being a good girl :)

I know i couldn't believe when he said, but he only said it once i told him he was from a rescue, as he said he didnt know his background so didnt want to say it just incase he upset me.

It was the best £63 ive paid for anything to know about the two things that showed up! They are both happily munching on grass now, all happy to be home and as soon as Gizmo came from the car and saw Meg (the dog) he WHEEKED so loud and they both rushed to the front of the carrier. :))

The metacam is in a dropper bottle so thats why he suggested a drop on food rather than into his mouth as it could be tricky.

I am much more relaxed now. :)

Ah, I get you. I had the dropper bottle as well. What I did was to squirt the metacam on to a teaspoon and then suck it up with the syringe.

They sound very happy to be home. Go and spoil them rotten :) xx

Grreat that you got some postive answers and some action to take. Hope Gizmo starts to feel better soon. :rose

Terrrible that he must have suffered so young. Good job he has you to take care of him now. x

I'm really pleased that it wasn't a stone and that his problems are treatable. I'm also very pleased that he's come to you because it's obvious you'll give him all the care and love he really needs!

My guinea on intermittant metacam licks it straight off my finger. Or you could put it on a tiny bit of brown toast. It tastes like honey apparently.

Thank you all for your wishes and good words. :)) I cant thank you all enough, this forum is such a great place to be when you need advice or have a poorly piggy, I'm so glad that i joined.

Thank you guinea pig forum members :) x x x

I've only just seen this thread as I missed it somehow. Anyway I was wondering what happened with his xray so I'm pleased to hear that Gizmo is how officially stone free. It's a good job you have a fuller idea of his medical history now, with the other things that showed up. It's always better to know and it sounds like your Vet is on the ball.

I hope the Metacam is working well for him x

I wondered where all this had gone about Gizmo. I live a sheltered forum life, should venture outside H&I a lot more, I miss too much elsewhere!

Good to hear he's not got any stones, tha is a big relief. Interesting about the arthritis and the ribs, least you know about that now and have something to help with it.

Accurate dose of Metacam - I've measured it numerous times and others have to, it can be safely suggested as being 0.05ml per drop. Dosing is generally best done twice a day as the vet suggested, this helps to provide continual pain relief throughout the day, otherwise it'll be effective for half the day and the other half it'll wear off. (This is the problem I had with Gwen and her heart meds!)

If he's not in much pain/stiffness, the twice a week dosage sounds good. Fingers crossed his bladder trouble will ease off soon. xx

Laura's correct the dose of the dog metacam dropper delivers 0.05mg per drop (1kg pig = 4drops or 0.13mls)
the cat metacam dropper delivers 0.017mg per drop (1kg pig = 11drops or 0.4mls)
The drug company says you can use it long term but should gradually reduce the dose down to the lowest beneficial level (esp with it being off license):)

Thanks Laura for the dose and thanks Debedee for the info. :)

He loves it and cant get it down him quick enough! But he does still squeak on occasion's when he wees, but not always so I'm guessing the vet will put him back onto the AB's when i go back on Tuesday evening and then hopfully it will clear up.
The vet said his bladder was all clear no sludge or anything. :)

I hope that the next course of AB's will shift the infection.
