Hi, Just got a new friend today, Female (already Have male) this is their first encounter, is this good, bad, normal? Please advise! Thanks

It also looked like he was already trying to "hump" her lol

Male is brown/white, Female is black

Buddy was purring alot around her but also grinded his teeth some.. and as you cal tell he was licking her "underneath" and she was either peeing or something a lot..

It didn't seem violent at all. The humping is normal as that's just him expressing his dominance, is he neutered?
As long as there's no actual fighting I would say it went quite well. I'm in the process of introducing my girls to my boy Archie and there's lots of rumbling and teeth grinding and the occasional nip if he's being a pest, but it all seems to be going well so far. Good luck with them both, let's hope they'll all get on once they get to know each other :)

Have you put them in neutral territory (a place where neither of them have been) and has Buddy been neutered? It looks like normal behaviour to me for a first piggy meeting :)

No he is not neutered, We were possibly hoping for babies...

We just werent sure if that was fighting or not, But we put him back in there and they are both trying to get through the cage to be together, He is purring a lot around her

This is a rescue friendly forum and discussion of breeding is not encouraged, if you are keen to have more piggies why not contact a local rescue?

I'm not taking about breeding, its just male and female and if they have babies that was fine, I got it for buddy to have a friend.. Just didnt want to go male male route

Not my goal, just wanting help man, calm down.

And for your information, She was abandoned and that was why we got her! we "adopted/ Rescued" her..

I'm not trying to have a go, but I would say that it's more than likely they would have babies. One reason people on here are so anti-breeding is because it can cause many problems which can lead to the death of the babies and/or the mum. There have been many bad stories on here of accidental pregnancies gone bad :(

I don't think anyone needs to tell people to 'calm down', Romily was just letting you know the forum position.

Putting mixed sex, un-neutered piggies together and hoping for babies is breeding IMO. Sorry. Did the rescue you got her from know this was your intention? I'd be surprised if they were happy about it. Do you know how old the female is? It may be unwise for her to get pregnant depending on her age if not for any other reasons.

The only reason i said it was it seemed to me that He jumped my bones about it. We are both very new to this world, and I have heard horror stories about male and male together.. If you look for my other threads/posts on here you will see they said to get a female.. I wrote this thread for help on the video not to tell me what i should or shouldnt do. if babies happen then they happen, I never said I would not nuter him, She was abandonded today and I was just being nice and rescued her, She is approx. a year old they didnt know for sure though So i cant be positive...

not trying to start any fights I just wanted some honest help with the video that is all, not wanting to start a debate about it, just need OPPINIONS please. thanks! Buddy is constantly purring around her, what does that mean?

This is a friendly and welcoming place and I was only advising about the forum rules.

Ok, well we're all here because we want what is best for the piggies. You obviously care or you wouldn't have rescued her in the first place.

It isn't adviseable to let a female of that age become pregnant if she hasn't had babies before as her pelvic bones will have fused and so if she does become pregnant she may not be able to deliver the babies - obviously not a nice situation for mum or babies.

In regards to the video, they look like they get on ok.

If she's about a year old she's too old to breed from and there will most definitely be problems with the pregnancy. I would advise you to get him neutered if they are going to live together, for her safety more than any thing else.

As for the purring that is completely natural, nothing to worry about, it's not really an aggressive noise. It may help to look at the Sticky's in the behaviour section to find out what all the noises etc are meaning. Hope this helps

so how much does it cost to get him nutered then?

I am astounded that someone who has the wealth of knowledge of this and other forums to help them should make such a poor decision. Shame on you.

Why are you shaming on me for? I did not know that, I heard people on here all the time talk about babies and have watched many you tube vidoes about it, How was i to know that it is wrong? dogs and cats have babies... We have babies....

at what age should the males be nutered? hes about 8 months, We got him at 5 from Petco....

It varies greatly between vets however between £40 - £60 seems to be the average, if you have a rescue nearby it is worth contacting them for a recommended vet and they may be eligible for a discount at the vets.

dont think i have a rescue near by i guess we can call petco and ask

The vets can confirm if he is developed enough however it is usually between 6 and 9 months. Once neutered he will need to be kept away from sows for up to 6 weeks.

Here is a link to the forum rules: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=36529

Please be aware that any sow over 8 months old is increasingly in trouble if she gets pregnant for the first time, as the ligaments of her pelvis start losing their elasticity and the contractions are getting weaker - do you know the age of your sow and whether she's had babies before? Too many pregnancies can also increase the risk of things going wrong.

You will need to separate your boar well before birth - most sows want peace and quiet in the last days before birth. Sows come into season within hours of giving birth! Back-to-back pregnancies REALLY take it out of a sow - she will have in effect vital nutrition diverted/taken out of her body for several months. You also do not want a randy boar with a one track mind around newly born babies! Around one fifth of all pregnancies will end in dead born babies, babies that do not live long or problems/death for the mum. Piggy mums do not feel the loss any less than a human would.

Please be also aware that you need to separate any male pups at three weeks old and that girls can get pregnant from 4 weeks onwards. The earliest documented brother-sister pregnancy is 24 days.

so how much does it cost to get him nutered then?

It all depends on your vet but I *think* it costs between £40 and £60 here in the UK. You may be wise to phone around your local vets to see which one is more competent on neutering guinea pigs. Once Buddy has been neutered, you will need to keep them apart for 6 weeks and then introduce them again.

so how much does it cost to get him nutered then?

It depends on the vets really, but it's usually between £40-£50. I have been quoted £37 from one vets, but they had no experience in guinea pig neutering so I'm not going to use them. From a cavy savvy vet I was quoted about £50, so it really depends.
I'm sure no one is is trying to put you down, it's just a very sensitive subject for some. No one is trying to be mean, we just care about the pigs and feel like it could cause problems if you go down the road of breeding, even if it's not totally intentional. Sorry if it has seemed otherwise :)

People do talk alot about babies on here but that is usually due to them either being brought into a rescue already pregnant or people getting piggies from a pet shop and being told they have 2 girls (or 2 boys) when they really have one of each sex. It isn't intentional breeding. Hope that helps.

They are both lovely looking pigs and I hope they can live together in future. You just don't want to endanger the sow unneccasarily.
