Looks like Beany has poked himself in the eye again, its red and gone cloudy. He did this afew years ago and we got some drops from the vet, but being a friday night the vets are shut. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do i bath it with bolid cool water or would it be ok to use some eye drops, i know when my hamster has sore eyes we used optrex, i only have some vital eyes eye drops for soothing uncomfortable eyes at the min. Do you think they would be ok to use? Thank you in advance

You can use Optrex Infected Eyes (chloramphenicol), which are antibiotic eye drops. However, I would still get the vet to have a look on Monday unless its looking much better. Are you sure there isn't anything still in the eye? I really hope Beany is feeling much better soon.

Thank you ive had a look and cant see anything. Going to have another look in a bit incase there is something thats now visable. Last time he got a bit of grass in his eye and i had to fish it out. I just want to do what i can for him till i can get him to the vets.

The Optrex Infected Eyes has the active ingredient most vets would give you anyway (chloramphenicol), so it is worth getting some and treating anyway - just a small amount in the eye three times a day.

Thank you, been and got some today. The lies you have to tell to get your hands on it. I washed his eye last night with some cool boiled water and this morning the redness had gone down a little, fingers crossed it will do the job.

He's sitting on my knee at the min munching on a carrot and watching me type, my other piggs aren't happy as he's getting that little extra attention :)

Glad there is some improvement - poor Beany.

Brolene eye drops (for humans) are also very good for sore or mildy infected piggy eyes but you still have to lie to get them ! :x

Thanks for that, think I'm going to make up a little first aid kit for them and get a fresh bottle to have on hand just incase it happens again. Will have to wait a month or two so they dont reconise me when i go back in the shop rolleyes

I told the pharmacist I was getting them for my daughter (well they are both called Hannah!). I was asked if she wore makeup. I said only occasionally, and she explained she would need to throw away any eye makeup or she could re-infect her eyes! I was finding it so hard not to giggle, having visions of Hannah piggy wearing mascara and eyeliner! LOL
