Hey guys,

My little girlie pong isn't too well :(

I got her out earlier in the week and noticed she was bleeding abit from her bits, as you know I'm not a fan of vets so we cut down on tomatoes and stuff like that and gave her some natural anti biotics which seemed to stop the bleeding for abit.
I also felt a lump inside her belly, like where her bladder is and she squeels if you push it and also make her bleed abit. :8...

Got her out today and it's still bleeding and the lump is still there, and can here her squeek when she pees, so we took her up and the vet said it could be a bladder invection thats really inflamed or a tumour in there or possiblely bladder stones.

She on anti biotics from the vets now to see if that helps the infection and we have to go back up Monday... Every pig we've had that's had anti biotics dies so I'm not to optimistic about this... :(

Happy thought though becuase shes lovely! Wish her luck guys. Ill post another post update on Monday when i get back..

She's a beauty! x)

If it is just a UTI (urinary tract infection), then she has extremely good chances of recovery. I have had a piggy that had two bladder stone ops, so that is survivable, too! If it turns out to be a tumour, then the outlook is not so good - no fault to the vet! Btw, has he checked for pyometra (infection of lining of the womb)?

What kind of antibiotic has he prescribed? Have you been given probiotics as well, especially with a high dose of baytril. It is recommend to give plenty of unsweetened cranberry juice with UTI.

To find out what the lump is you will need an x-ray; especially if she isn't reacting to the antibitoics within a week. Please be aware that cystitis (bladder infection) may need more than one course of antibiotics to clear.

Pong is beautiful. From what you have described I too suspect stones and would expect the vet to have done an x-ray sooner if he felt a lump too.

What antibiotics is she on at what dose? I too would recommend a probiotic, given 1-2 hours after the antibiotic, it can help prevent/ease any side effects.

I know it is hard, but try not to link the deaths of your previous sick pigs to the antibiotics, it probably seems too coincidental to you, but from a medical point of view, there are numerous valid reasons that could explain why you lost those pigs when they were put on antibiotics:

1) The dosage was too low, thus ineffective and the guinea pig died of the illness itself.
2) The illness had progressed to such a degree that the medication hadn't time to take effect.
3) The antibiotic was a toxic one e.g. penicillin.
4) The guinea pig was given a safe antibiotic, but was intolerant of the medicine and the symptoms not noticed soon enough to save them.

Of course you may never know for sure, but I hope the above explanation helps to calm your fears over the use of antibiotics in piggies.

Thanks guys for the good lucks.

And for the tips.

She is on baytril. Seems to bleeding more, mum said there was puss earlier but i haven't see any yet..

Just hope we don't lose her, the girl we put with her loves her to pieces!

Pong sounds as though she has very similar symptoms to my piggie Athena. Ask your vet for metacam for pain relief and it's also an anti-inflammatory and if she's on baytril she should be on a probiotic as well as baytril can cause tummy upsets.

Athena has a thickened bladder which is prone to infection which causes her to pass this thick blood/mucus. Metacam really has helped her. Please don't dispair as Athena has had this problem on and off since December and whenever it flares up a course of septrin and metacam has always cleared it up
