Unsure where i should post this ,hopefully i made the right choice !
A 10yo asked me what % of poo is eaten and i don't know the answer . I thought someone on here would know

Morning you can tell your 10 year old that it's not actually there poo that they eat what they eat are called caecotrophs which is a compound of vitamins and proteins that help the guinea pig digest B vitamins and are vital to their diet and well being 💩💩💩

It's a question most guinea pig owners wonder about, I think. I think it varies according to how much a piggy needs to adjust his gut bacteria. They seem to be able to sense how much they need, a bit like we crave certain foods. It's a good question actually. It's a sign that they are healthy and their digestion is working well.

Actually that has recently been found to not be the case. Guinea pigs don’t produce caecotrophs.

Guinea pigs do actually just eat their normal poops for a second run through the gut to extract maximum nutrients.

Rabbits produce/eat caecotrophs - ie a different type of poop.

I certainly don’t know what percentage it is, or even is that is possible to know. There may be variations depending on many factors.

I've closed your report and left it as it is. It's a very good learning point for other owners. 👍

I think it depends on the individual piggy. A piggy that is feeling unwell will also eat more of it's own poop and also that of it's cage mates.
